SBMM will never succeed, so stop hoping for it.
This game moves you up in ranks in many different ways, which makes it very hard for any SBMM to be properly calculated. You could kill a lot of people and be thrown out of the game before 15 other teams. You could not klll anyone and place top 5. You can do any combination in between.
So ranked play or not, SBMM is going to try to calculate based on that. And what's going to be the determining factor? Wins? Kills? How much you help your team mates? And if you say all of it, what if I only do one thing? How does that rate when I do nothing of the other things? I could meet someone my 'rank' who SUCKS as a team player but gets some kills maybe. He's going to move up. I could leave my team (like I do) in King's Canyon to die, then go into top 5. I could hurl shields and heals and revives into my team, contribute nothing else, and ride their coattails. I could actually do nothing to help my team at all, die, and just wait until my rng matching gets me up in wins.
None of that tells me if I'm playing with the right people for what I want to do.
So SBMM was always going to be a joke. Stop worrying about it and play like a fool.

Yeah, man, I feel you
Honestly, OverWatch has a similar issue in its Competitive scene, I feel. obviously, a bit different because you're fighting one team for objectives and you have five teammates, vs the BR style of Apex, but the reality is the same. It all still feels like you described, regardless of the differences in game play style.
The thing is, with Apex, im much less stressed about it. Reason is, depending on the mode there are 20 or 30 Squads and 57 or 58 other players I'm playing against, in a match. Statistically, the odds of me being number one, are slim. So, I don't worry about being the Champion or ranking up, I just play.
Whether I'm the first one to die or the last, doesn't matter to me. I always drop in a match with the mentality of: just try and be a decent teammate, try to get some decent loot, and try to have a good time. And, if I do my best, I feel like I succeeded whether I'm part of the first squad to bite the dust, I make it to top 10, top five, or all the way to champion. I just try to have a good time.
And, honestly, it works for the most part. There are some games where I get frustrated, especially if it's things out of my control (the game freezing, teammates leaving the second they get downed, etc), but all in all, I'm pretty chill with this game. And that says a lot for me, especially in a first-person shooter. Those games usually end up getting my blood pumping, in a very negative way. But, Apex seems to be different. And I'm thankful for that.
So, Yeah, if I had any advice to give it would be to just stop caring. Im not saying be mean and yell at teammates or anything like that. I just mean stop caring about being #1 and all that. Don't take this game too seriously. Just try to drop in a match and enjoy the ride, as best you can, every time you play. Honestly, that mentality has done wonders for my overall mood. I actually feel better coming out of this game most of the time than I do going in, and that's a rarity for me. Usually I feel more frustrated and stressed coming out of games like this, than I do at the start. So, I think that says a lot.
For anyone reading this, I know it's not much, but I hope my comment helps 🙂

SBMM at the beginning of season 4 was great!
I really enjoyed the game and got matched with fair enemys.
But now it feels changed again!
The lobbys are more mixed again and the skill spread is too wide!
I would accept longer waiting times up to 30 seconds if I just get a fair match of 15 minutes!
- 6 years ago@Flashshark1980 Yeah, since the beginning of season 5, I've seen my share of enemies with the "holy trinity" of badges (pred, 4k damage and 20 kills). In season 4 this was very rare but now in season 5 it's quite common.
Yes, it would be nice to have at least a few fair matches every day. I'm always astonished by the fact that so many players have near perfect aim.
