Vertical audio is a mess and "no sound" is still there
While the enemy footsteps are louder when the sound works and the horizontal directional audio is quite good it all falls appart when it comes to vertical audio. When in a building there is no way to tell if the enemy is on the same floor, under or above.
Also the "no sound" issues are still there, as usual mostly when somebody is behind you, when it counts the most...
