The gas is described as both bad for lungs, and an aerosol acid which is why the synthetics/robots still care. It should do damage for a brief period after leaving it as well, AND AFFECT ARMOR AT THE SAME RATE.
Then the W-key players might actually care and it would let him, you know, CONTROL an area.
