Cross server play

I was playing with a friend the other night, he was playing on the Belgium server and I was on the London server. I always thought that in order to play in a party you needed to be on the same server (thinking League of Legends), how true is this? Can anyone confirm?

@guesswrk You will have been on the same server. If you select disparate data centres it will choose one and connect you both to it. As far as I know this is done based on the party-leader's datacentre.

He checked while we were in game and it said he was connected to Belgium. I was the party leader and connected to London.

@guesswrk It might mean that his datacentre selected is belgium, which it will have been. If you'd traced your connections you will both have been playing on the same server.
