Dodgy servers

Want to know if people are having trouble playing the game atm, trying to play ranked here and I keep ending on bad servers that make me lag out of existence. My ping is fine, I checked if I joined wrong server but I didn't

@OldTreeCreeper Servers work differently than the usual client PCs. Normally, they host more matches, from dozens to hundreds, depending on the game. For this, they use a lot more CPU cores and a big amount of RAM. They don't do the rendering part, so most things related to graphics aren't loaded. It's just the hitboxes and coordinates that they care about primarily, to calculate interaction, positioning, maybe some physics, etc.., other stuff like textures and sounds are just id's that they pass back and forth (so that player X know what skin is used by Y, what he pings or what quip he's playing, for example).

It's all about processing, so the typical defragmentation would have hardly any effect on the server. Defragmentation is used to improve the speed of reading data from the drive, usually to load it to RAM, but game servers load almost everything they need at the start of the game, otherwise they would be very unstable under load.

Because the number of players in an Apex match is big, this can make processing time take a lot, but also require more data to be sent per update. These go down significantly as players get eliminated, which is why the second half of most matches feels much smoother.

@DoYaSeeMe That's very interesting and explains the game lag easing up in the second half of the ranked games, but does that not also imply that the servers are deliberately overloaded from the beginning? Possibly a cost issue?

I've also noticed having played a lot of ranked this season, that the que times are longer with more players in the que, up to 500 but generally 100-200. Another cost saving? This does not compare to say the normal trios where it usually counts up to 60 and off we go.

Did I understand correctly, is this really about hard disk defragmentation?
They don't use ssd's for servers?!
Just in Case a CEO is reading that... we life in 2021!

  • @Br0kenPiece I wonder if that's the reason you have to wait 7 years to get back to the lobby when you die in unranked and try to back out. Last thing I want to do is to spectate anyone

@twitchSeriel_FPS Character glitching and completely freezing in lobby, set to ranked but puts you in pubs, then when you do finally get in game you have to contend with audio clutter saturating and cancelling important things like footsteps, unnecessary visual clutter, ping compensation and other rubbish that causes a delay in your actions or them not even registering at all now, whole seconds from being shot through doors in reasonable time for any single core server running from windows xp era to process before i'm knocked and then as you say being forced to stay in that crapfest from not being able to leave the game till you finished your coffee.

Game is a complete wreck but are you excited for next heirloom because they can't afford to upgrade servers or fix the game as that would cost money..

Or hire competent coders. Which i think is also part of the problem on top of the servers going by that list of issues..

@OldTreeCreeper No one would do such thing deliberately and the hybrid cloud solution is designed to eliminate the problems that happen when the server capacity limit is reached. But the huge surge in internet traffic caused by the pandemic has affected both server availability and connection quality.
