FOV Steam

Hello,

I would like to know whether modifying the cl_fovScale parameter through the game's configuration files (videoconfig.txt) or Steam launch options to achieve a Field of View above 110 (for example, 120) is considered allowed under Apex Legends' Terms of Service and Anti-Cheat policies.

I am aware that the in-game menu limits FOV to 110, but this parameter appears to be a native game variable — not an external injection or executable modification.

Specifically, I would like to know:

1. Is using cl_fovScale values above the default considered a violation of the Terms of Service?

2. Could this result in an account ban by Easy Anti-Cheat or by Respawn/EA moderation?

3. Is this permitted in competitive or ranked play?

Thank you for your time. I await your official response before using this setting.

Best regards.

  • Heya,

(First off clarifying that I don't work for EA / Respawn but I am a volunteer)

I don't think there really is a direct answer that can be given in this case.
From what I've seen Community Managers say regarding changing settings in config files (Outside from the in-game UI) is that it's usually not recommended.

These kinds of things are usually a bit specific, and it's not always really possible to comment whether or not it would fall in boundaries, as it's usually a bit grey when it comes to specific rules in the Terms of Service.

Modifying game settings via methods that are not natively supported, such as editing the config files directly; could technically be considered a violation of the rules but I'd personally say that it wouldn't be a problem in general.

BUT if you are modifying settings that are not accessible via the in-game UI OR if you are modifying values in a way that the in-game UI would not accept (Lower or Higher values). Then it could be considered an unfair advantage, as the average player would not be able to edit these files.

In your scenario, it would mean that you would have a higher FOV than intended, which gives you an unfair advantages compared to other players that don't know how to edit the game files.

Now I do not know if Respawn / EA would action users for doing this, but I would still strictly advise against it, as it would be a violation of the rules and therefore your account could be at risk.

I hope that answers your question, though if you have some uncertainties; feel free to ask!
