Future plans to curb cheating in Ranked. An idea.

Given some thought... My proposal for ranked play per season. Three methods.

Medthod 1: A "buy in" system using x ammount of  Legendary tokens to access the Ranked Season game play. This is to curb people banned from making an immediate account and jumping right back into the ranked scene and ruining the game for most people, it may also offer some incentive not to cheat.

Method 2: Purchasing the Season battle pass includes access to the Ranked Seasonal game play. This may also help curb cheating seeing the use of real money.

I think Method 1 and 2 combined would help the most istead of using one or the other.

Method 3: A flat real money cost or use of Apex Coins of 10-20 dollar range. I would suggest making the battle pass purchasable the same as now but you dont get access to the ranked game play where is 20 dollars gives you the battle pass along with access to ranked game play. to some this maybe steep in price range but seeing it would be at most 60 a year or 5 dollars a month. thats not too bad. This would probably have the most substantial reduction in cheating.

In my opinion the use of the "f2p" format is dated, it was a time when cheating was less prevalent and in todays time, its rampant and abused for all types of reasons. The only real way to reduce the cheating is to add a model where it cost you someting to play, so you have something to lose. You cant just re create an account. Its like having a child who doesnt listen and you only correct the child by saying "dont do that". It doesnt work, there has to be consequences to actions as it is in the real world. When you can just recreate an account there is no consequence of value. I think with monetary consequences along side a better anti cheat software, gives the best chances of running a clean fair game.

Im open to all ideas on the topic! Give me your or ideas or Reword what ive proposed! Lets make a change or atleast try to make a change and have dialogue here!

  • This has been suggested multiple times already and the main drawback is always the problem with matchmaking if you’re gonna segregate the paying from the non-paying. This system is better for non-BR games where you don’t need 60 players. Respawn can implement this in Arenas but almost no one plays that mode already and this system will worsen that mode’s MM.

I respectfully disagree with this. Overwatch not going f2p and OW2 will be the death of that franchise since Blizzard doesn't want to move away from their tradition $60 multiplayer game and then expect you to pay more in the game. Try waiting for a single match for at least 10-15mins just to fill up a 12 player match, now try doing that in a BR for 60 players.

I get that you would like to at least make it harder for cheaters and smurfs to play, but  I'm pretty sure there are other better ways. This is EA, I'm 1000% sure they already thought of milking more money from players.

It is a complete fallacy that paying for a game stops cheating.

Paying games have just as many cheaters.

it is the popularity of a game and ease of writing the cheat code versus anti-cheat code that determines how much people try to cheat.

@KelRiever While I agree people cheat in paid games, you can slow things a bit if people cannot just make new free accounts over and over.
  • I still argue differently.  Fortnite and Overwatch (Blizzard's game is trash but their anti-cheat is good) are both immensely popular games but with less cheating because of the dedication both their companies do to shutting down cheaters.  One is free to play and the other is pay to play.   But cheating is rampant in plenty of either pay or freemium games.  It's Apex that gets the attention, I'd argue, because it is probably the most popular game with the most cheating.

Not saying Respawn doesn't care, but I seriously doubt EA is bothering to spend the resources they need to fight cheating.   Fighting cheating is a cost, so no company wants to do it.  But if you start losing players in droves because of it, theres no cost like no income.

Apex gets away with it so far because it is still popular.  I don't really think people are interested in quitting the game over cheaters.

My response to several Replies: The idea of "seperating" servers for F2p and P2P is not an idea i put foward. The game will still be F2P the only "cost" "P2P" if you will, will be the use of legendary tokens(in game currency) to access the "ranked" mode per season, or an alternate route is to just purchase the battle pass (apex coils, real cash currency) which unlocks the "ranked" mode per season. So there is no seperation, the only difference is ranked mode is behind an entrance fee(paywall). Trios duos etc all still free inluding arenas.

Another arguement people put foward is "their wont be enough people to fill the 60 man slots, and long wait times if you charge for ranked mode" I completely dissagree, If we really think about the issue. How many people have put Apex Legends down because of the cheating? I truly believe if Respawn took a stance on cheating and attempted something new to curb ceating.  A  p2p ranked mode, 1000s to 10s of 1,000s would see that as Respawn is taking a stand and atleast attempting something new to help relieve the cheating problem. In the end the ammount of people playing ranked would still be the same. The ammount of non willing to pay participants of ranked mode would be offset by people coming back willing to pay to play ranked mode in hopes of cheating being detered.

  • @13lack-0utuse in game tokens that you can earn by playing a game to unlock ranked - agreed, would eliminate those sub 100 level Diamond+ players in game that clearly disrupt the ideal system.

Paying actual money - hell no, not for the game that is all the time in beta testing. When Apex will solve their issues with ever breaking servers, various code:xxx errors that in many cases also steal RP, get you banned for 10 min etc. I will consider paying for it.

Until then my pay for the game is my time reporting those bugs here. That's enough.

Plus people (especially streamers who make money via the game) will easily afford to pay while kids who don't even have a summer job will be segregated/discriminated and we might lose some talent there.

Finally, I personally don't play pubs in general - a few games as a warmup per day at most. So for me getting ranked mode behind the wall of pay would mean that I would just uninstall this game instantly, like no kidding, do that and I will send you a screenshot of the fact during the same day.

What prevents cheating is good, up-to-date anti-cheat system. People mentioned here Blizzard - a good example, their games like Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 as far as I know still haven't been ripped and are not available in various sources of the web in a format where players can get it for free and play for free even a single-player mode.

Apex has issues because their code in source seems to have flaws, stuff from previous seasons does not get removed and get exploited in hacks e.g. there was an option to see in game how many people spectate you, now hackers implement that in their software so that hacking player can see that fact and disable/hack in a smarter way a soon as he/she sees that someone is spectating him/her, while going full-on while there are 0 spectators.

And such "features" are plenty in Apex.

To a certain extent I just think they will not going to rework the game, potentially make it less appealing just to eliminate those features and in turn, lose hackers but also paying regular players because the game will become more similar to other games before it.

    To sum up:

    • in-game currency that unlocks features and one you can earn by playing the game, gaining experience
    • better anti-cheat
    • rework of the game code, potentially removing some cool features from the game e.g. aim assist for the sake of it not being exploited by hackers
    • more rights to the community to increase reaction speed of banning players
    • better automated flagging system for players who just shoot from zero to hero in a short period of time, timely review of those cases
    • more strict policy vs streamers who advertise public game stomping, smurfing etc.
    • more info to educate community on core values of the game, teamwork, communication
