Tbh I would be kinda glad.
Since online gaming came about I got bored of games real easy... every game was just another FPS. Halo, Gears, CoD, Apex, Rainbow etc etc.
It's just the same game in different aesthetics. (Essentially).
Would be good if people weren't just such clones. More variety. More open world stuff. Whatever. Just do something different.
But there is no match for beating another real human opponent. Beating the CPU doesn't have the same feel or worth.
Solo games are great when it's like a story or movie that you are apart of. Or a series. Detroit Become Human for example.
But yeah.

7.5 Mio players in The Finals Open Beta tells me otherwise ... thats similar to Apex starting in 2019.
Why should a genre die when there is Millions of potential customers ?
Arena FPS was the the thing of the early 2000, then the scenario shooters took the crown. After that it was the time of Battle Royal.
Who knows what the next thing will be like ... but it surely will attract the masses again.
People just love to point and click, that will never change. - reconzero2 years agoSeasoned Ace@1ronKeys
"But there is no match for beating another real human opponent. Beating the CPU doesn't have the same feel or worth."
After twenty+ years of shooters I can definitely say that I know what you mean. But I respectfully disagree. I hadn't played my second match of Halo 2 team slayer when I started asking myself the questions that I still ask today and that have ultimately ruined multiplayer gaming for me, and I suspect are beginning to ruin it for a lot of people.
"What did that guy just do that I wasn't doing to him, and yet I'm on the ground and he just waltzes away?"
"What kind of desperation caused matchmaking to put me and ____ in the same game together?"
"Why is every shooter designed with the kind of skill gap that actively encourages cheaters and says to the casual weekend gamer, 'Hey buddy, just run around for a while, the pros'll be along to deal with you soon enough.'"
The list goes on and on. The real point is this: when you say that beating a computer will never be as compelling as beating another person, I call that a lack of faith on your part, though an understandable one. Developers SHOULD currently be engaged in an arms race to develop the AI enemy that is indistinguishable from a real person. Why is this not the NEXT BIG THING in shooters? It should be. I'll say it here right now: the company that does this will be the next giant in gaming, gaming's version of Apple or Amazon. And I'm just some schlub playing games after work. If I can see this why can't they? Why aren't they doing something about it? Halo Infinite was supposed to be a huge step forward with AI, and it WAS a step forward though hardly a huge step.

Dunno how that'd work really.
A computer could just hit you with 100% accuracy 100% of the time.
If you make it not do that, then it's just a bit unreal.
How do you make it have the same flaw and ego in decision making and teamwork. I don't know. Maybe it's a lot easier than that.
But I feel like there will still be something distinctly unhuman about it.
And again, beating something that doesn't exist as opposed to your fellow man. Different feeling different meaning.

If you were in a "bot" playlist, then yes, I could see how that could work. But what if you were in a playlist that mixed real players with AI and the AI was so good, so inconsistent and unpredictable, that you couldn't tell whether you were being shot at by a person or a CPU? If a developer could convince me on that playing field then I could happily go into AI-only playlists and never come back out. Maybe that's just me though. There's no wrong answer here - I'd just like to see the computers get so good at mimicking people that I couldn't tell the difference.
- hayhor2 years agoHero@reconzero I do miss the original really good shooter stories. Like Halo 1 and Titanfall 2.

For a long time I thought I did too. By the time Guardians came out, I played through the campaign one time, enjoyed it, but never even went back to it for a second go around. Infinite came out and I didn't buy it until forge rolled out and I still haven't played the campaign. Probably never will? Not sure if that's a commentary on the quality of the newer stories, or on my evolution as a gamer. All I want to do anymore is forge. And I'm not as enthusiastic about that as I might have been.

@reconzero Certainly. GTA 6 trailer is coming out today and its one of those so anticipated games that if they come up with something completely new it will certain turn the whole gaming industry trend towards something else. Also nothing beats a good single player story (GTAs, Witcher 3, some of the Assassins Creed games, RDRs etc).
I think the PvP element related dopamine addiction is a thing with the younger generation. So much and immediately. I like to take my doses in smaller batches and find that feeling of success in smaller things like hitting a good shot or finding a great angle for particular situation. If the games are not going my way today I play something else and try again tomorrow. Other end of the player spectrum you see these people coming here to complain how they are feeling miserable for not yet securing a 20 bomb in the past 2 weeks even though they grind 6 hours a day. And therefore they think MM is a problem or cheater problem is out of hand (not saying it isnt but you get the point).
Also besides good AI I think variety is the solution. Mixtape offers some but not enough since its still PvP. When I dont feel like having a shootout in RDR2 I go hunting or treasure hunting etc.- ComicBookGuy27272 years agoSeasoned Ace
Lets get some more campaigns and single player games at this point. Bring back the PvE era.
Its all I have left as an old guy.
