Just a quick expansion on some of the things others have already said.
Drop icy cold edge of map. Every time. Even if your squadmates won't go with you. Prioritize survival over engagement. Learn the maps, learn the legends. Don't play the legend you "like." Play the legend with the best mobility. Valk. Later on that legend will be handy for all sorts of things, but right now she will just help you survive if you get in a scrape while trying to move across the map.
Always move around the edge, try not to plod straight through the middle.
Always carry one mid-range poke weapon. Great for target practice on people farther away who will often have a hard time responding. If they do then just fly away.
Once you get the hang of knowing how to avoid enemies until you are ready for them, then you're ready to start getting friendlier with your squadmates. It won't be easy at first because most players in this game want HOT DROP and instant death. But at some point you may find yourself with teammates bordering on competent. And that's where engagements become something more than just instant death. You might still die, but you'll make 'em work for it.
Avoid ranked. Avoid mixtape. Firing range has some use. Bot Royale has some as well.
Best of luck.
