Player Attitudes and Behaviors In Different Servers- My Observations

Hello all,

I want to start off by saying this:

I feel guilty that I'm better off solo queuing instead of playing with my friends. I've felt this way since last season, S13 and now 14. Do you guys feel this way? Let me know in the comments below.

I say this because 3 stacking these days is extremely difficult especially if your friends aren't part of the 1% who can slap. I'm not saying I'm part of the 1% but I'm definitely an above average player in Apex. Just seems like no matter how dialed in your 3-stack team is, there's always one especially those bald wraiths who can 1v59 every match that gets in your way. Can it be the name of the game? sure...

But Apex is no longer...fun. It's a job. It's a job for you to "git gud", develop different and effective strategies and be the best. Could it be an SBMM issue? Probably...but I'm not here to talk about that. I want to think I'm having fun, but it's more so an addiction now and Respawn probably thinks it's for the best.

I'm here to talk about the players attitudes and behaviors who fill the servers available in Apex. Now I won't be able to elaborate on each server but I will give you a comparison between America and Japan.

I primarily play American servers because it's the lowest ping available to me, specifically Oregon. But we all know how Oregon is.

Lately, I've been drifting away from American servers because I just can't handle it.

My observation with American servers:

-They Beam....HARD

-They are rude. No matter how well you can successfully trade with an opposing team, if there is a slight problem with anything, they will call you out

-Very needy. If your teammates are knocked, they will spam the hell out of the ping system or tell you to res them.

-They always say "one shot, one bullet, low" There's nothing wrong with this because it's communication but it's the frequency. We may be occupied, but in their eyes, it's assumed we should stop what we are doing, walk our happy a$$ to the enemy who killed them and finish them.

-Extremely Racial even if they don't mean it (because it's 2022, people can say what they want, I guess) ... I can't count how many times I get called the N bomb or the R bomb even if I was in position where I carried the team lol. Clearly, I just ignore it. No reason to intervene.

Before you start to keyboard warrior it up, I'm American, I live here, so this isn't a biased stab at American servers. I would say however, with little saving grace that low Gold rank and below, I get some of the most chill players in American servers. Because to me, I think these kids haven't been tainted with the sweat of the try-hards Mid-Plat on up and they are just having fun.

Tell me you never experienced a match with "randos" where you all get boxed, not one of them said a word since jump until the end and they say "you're so f'n bad", "You're dog", "you're trash, kid". I would be humbled if not 1 of the 100 million players experienced that in this game.

Now Japan servers:

-Extremely polite

-Respectful

-In low rank and pubs, they normally don't talk but are EXTREMELY effective using the pinging system

-They apologize when they are knocked

-They thank you when you res them

-They don't seem to "Beam" hard (not to confuse that with being an easier lobby. I will explain more in detail below)

-Very welcoming to Americans especially when you can speak some Japanese like I do.

What do you guys think? If you're able to handle the ping in Tokyo servers, have you had the same experiences? Let me know.

So, when I said they don't "Beam" hard in Japan...this is where I started to care about observing the behavioral differences between servers and honestly, I just have a better time in Tokyo servers despite its high ping. It's still competitive. It's still hard. You got some crazy serious players who can tap strafe the whole map. However, there's just some small instances that make me see that there's a 'cleaner side' to Apex.

It seems like 90 percent of the time, players in American servers don't miss their shots. It gets "SUS" as these kids would say these days. I start to see trending videos on TikTok where people are exhibiting or are being accused of using Chronus Zen, Strike pack, or this Auto Hot Key/Macro feature for PC that counters recoil. EGREGIOUS! It's hard to believe but the proof is in social media and they think it's not incriminating at all. Naturally, people are curious and want to try it especially if that means they will have an advantage. I mean..there are cheaters out there. Respawn, have you looked into this? probably not...

In Japan, though, I can sense mostly integrity in these lobbies. I like that people miss their shots. I don't feel like I'm being pushed so hard or being lasered the moment I expose myself. I'm sure there's still a handful of cheaters but it's just not as prevalent. Overall, it's the attitudes in Japan where I feel takes the W. They don't get mad, they don't talk smack. 99% of them I would say especially in Tokyo ranked are just super respectful. Sure you'll get that 1% that will lose their minds and get mad but it's just not comparable to American servers.

I'll leave you all with this...It's not the servers that make up the experience, it's the people. People can have the same attitudes and behaviors from Japan and apply it to any server. But I know it won't work that way because everyone is all raised differently wherever they grew up. Remember, your attitudes have nothing to do with the game, that's you, that's your identity and whoever or whatever raised you.

How about you guys? Have you played in other servers outside of America/Japan? What are your experiences?

  • I find this comparison of American and Japanese social manners in game entirely unsurprising.  That just reflects the well-known respective cultures of Japan and the US.  I've played on Europe servers quite a bit, but never in game chat, I party up with a European friend.  I have watched a large amount of content from European players, though, and they seem to be just about on a par with US players in regard to what you're describing.  I won't mention particular nationalities, but certain European countries seem chock full of ignorant and rude players just like the US.  Duos queued together especially seem prone to abuse their team mates, in languages they apparently assume the subject of their abuse doesn't understand, often referring to them in third person.  A lot fewer people in Europe seem to use game chat in general, due to language differences.  Just my 2 cents.

I feel like you've hit on almost every single reason why team-based games suck. As you said, it's not the servers, it's the people. Once in a while they're great, but mostly they're reckless and blame everyone but themselves for what goes wrong.

I don't play any foreign servers, so I can't speak to that part of the discussion, although like @pandareno1999 I watch European streamers once in a while. Same crap, different continent.

But here's what I have observed on the New York server: while most players are trash-talking gangstas, it's the women I've played with who consistently are polite, helpful, occasionally team-oriented, and often good communicators. When I get squadmates with gamertags that obviously belong to a female, I breathe a sigh of relief that I'll have at least one match without the toxic garbage that usually makes me mute before the game has even started.
  • I’m half Japanese and play on the Tokyo servers and from time to time we switch to US servers (Oregon has the lowest ping). I am in a 3 stack 95% of the time. Take note that not only Japanese people play on the Tokyo servers and that Koreans and some of the south east asians play on those servers too which means a lot of different languages hence the chat is less used most of the time.

As for difficulty, I can only talk about pub games since I wouldn’t try playing rank in high ping servers. I find that players in Oregon are more aggressive in terms of playstyle but not necessarily worse players. I love how playstyles vary from server to server and then it changes again if you’re in a PC lobby.

3 stacking while more difficult, is still better than playing with randoms. I still get more wins I can play legends like Gibby or Caustic which is harder when playing solo (would prefer a mobility legend when solo). Lastly, an insider tip for those who praise us Japanese people as super kind people. No we are no better than other people from the West. A lot still judge other people, racists, xenophobic, and sexist BUT the difference is thay they won’t say it to your face.

Good manners may only be skin deep, but I still prefer them. Makes me wish I was west coast instead of east.
  • @AREYOUSITHREOUS I play on the European servers and I have found everybody to be very polite and helpful (except the tea baggers!).  But that may be because I use the ping system exclusively 😃

@reconzero I lived in New England for 30 years and California for the last 20. It's not as great as you might think. People are more polite on the surface but are often harbor a nasty side of passive aggression and two-faced behavior.

Same in Tokyo right now against gaijins (foreigners) because they’re judged as “dirty” and brought the virus over. Foreigners also don’t wear masks. While it is not mandated by law, it is still expected that you still do with the expectation that you always think of the people around you. You would notice this in subways where Japanese people would rather stand than seat beside a foreigner. Just the weird differences between cultures that are individualistic and collectivist. It’s not always greener on the other side.

My family and friends are very judgmental of the USA right now because of the “school” events that happened. On the other hand I’m planning a trip to Orlando next year.

    Cheese,

Thank you so much for your response. I may have generalized Japan culture a bit but note that it's only what I've experienced specifically playing in the server, respectively. I still much prefer it, even in ranked as I get better success playing with "Randos" as opposed to American.  I do appreciate the objectivity and I have visited Japan once a couple of years ago. The experience was mostly great. I stayed in a hotel near Hamamatsucho for a couple of weeks. Went around Tokyo (I suppose like all other foreigners do), So I'm sure 90% of my experiences there will be positive. I did however hang around Tsukiji Fish Market and some local restaurants were not welcoming to tourists as it was a Japanese only served restaurant so I do understand.  It was even more prevalent when I went to visit a Temple in Kamakura. It's not that I didn't feel welcome there, they just didn't care to entertain tourists.
