I has this today (forced to spectate a solo dropper) that was absolutely infuriating.
I just don't understand the issue so many have with this penalty.
If you get downed, it's barely 60 seconds if not finished by a thirsty enemy.
It's another 60 second window for your teammates to get your banner.
What's 2 mins, at the most, going to change in your very busy lives when playing Apex?
Am I missing something here? If you get shot down, and you don't care to get re-spawned, nothing is forcing you to remain seated on your a$$ and wait it out....
If your team recovers your banner, the least you can do, regardless if they're good or not, is give them a chance to respawn you.

Getting eliminated in this game is a very abrupt change of state, the more you are immersed in the fight, the bigger the fall when you get boxed. This abrupt drop really breaks your flow and the downed state doesn't offer much of a cooldown, you can barely move and protect yourself, you can't drop items, etc.. As a consequence of this sudden change, your brain will cry for more adrenaline, pushing you to act asap, to plug it back to the source of excitement. Spectating only makes things worse, as the adrenaline dose is right there, but your hands are tied, throttling your stimulated brain. It is well known that emotion leads to impulsivity, to a need to act and take a decision, even if a bad one. That's why players in Apex vent out toxicity, smash stuff and leave immediately to join another match as quickly as possible.
Judging from this angle, it could also help to give players more things to interact with while they're downed, like switching skins / legends, play some minigame, read some lore or maybe explore the void in a creative way.
