The actual future of multiplayer games

Fortnite and Destiny 2 have recently made the shift from forced SBMM to selected SBMM; both of these games have received an increase of overall players AND positive feedback from the community.

It makes me question the future of multiplayer games in general. I understand that forced SBMM is an effective strategy to make more money by the publisher, but if other companies are offering their consumer OPTIONS (no SBMM or SBMM), AND finding success on that front, it makes me wonder how long games like Apex will take until they follow suit.

Personally speaking, I have given up on Apex. I quit a week ago and am happy with my decision. The current SBMM algorithm places me in public lobbies with more than 50% pred/diamond trails. I lost close to 200 games recently just to see if the SBMM algorithm places me in easier lobbies— nope. My lobbies are still 30-40% diamond and pred trails. THIS MAKES THE GAME CONSISTENTLY UNPLAYABLE.

I’m not even actually against SBMM in theory. I want new/lower skilled players to avoid getting consistently stomped by the top players. But the current system is just grueling to the point where even skilled players are having a miserable time. What I am going to say next is going to be a hard pill to swallow:

Lower skilled players occasionally running into high skilled players and sweating is NOT as bad as forcing ALL players to play opponents who make you sweat ALL the time.

TL;DR: Publishers are slowing moving aware from FORCED SBMM. EA should follow.

@hayhorI think it's averaging of the players skill... When I play with my usual 3 in trios we are in the pred lobbies and it's 6+ pred trails coming out the drop ship. Yet when we play in Duos we might see 1-2 pred trails here and there.

The other 2 players I play with are better than me and I think when its me+them in duos we end up in those weird lobbies that are some place between mid tier and and top tier. But when its 2 preds+me we end up in the top tier lobbies. So it makes sense to me that the skill averaged amongst the team..

It could be pre-made as well. But I've run rounds with other players in full pre-made squads and we don't end up in the Pred Lobbies. It's only when I play with 2 specific friends, for what ever reason when we team we are always in lobbies with 6+ pred trails and almost nothing but diamonds. We are probably the only squad in the lobby that lacks a diamond trail haha

We rarely play in trios anymore for different reasons. Some of it was because the lobbies were definitely hard. Not impossible but difficult.

@DarthValtrex It depends on quite a few things but I know my friends are a similar level to me and when we match up we get quite a few preds and diamonds in the lobby. And we are not that level.

If we do poorly in a few in a row the sbmm then puts us in an easier lobby.
