Twitter Respawn post “Latinx” tournament

The Spanish speaking community has inclusive language they’ve developed, Respawn not taking that into consideration and using a term coined by English speakers feels slightly racist.

For inclusivity purposes the appropriate phrase is either “latine” or if you’re speaking English you can just say “latin” some others insist “latino” is already a gender neutral term.

Mistakes happen and that’s understandable but the way the social media team is handling that post is horrific.

Legitimate concerns and arguments are being “hidden” while people are using slurs and are being left up. Also completely innocent comments are being hidden?

There is a lot of non binary hate in that thread of course which I condemn with every fiber of my being but the way the social media team at Respawn is handling this is really disgusting as insulting.

  • After doing a little more research, I can see the Respawn social media team has a history of hiding innocent posts. Even ones of people submitting fan art.

    Very strange

  • @hayhor Sadly no ☹️ that would have been much better and they should probably rebrand it to that.

“Latinx” is an attempt by English speakers to create inclusive language for the Spanish community. You can’t pronounce that word in Spanish and the Latin community largely rejects it.

I, as a hispanic, latino and latinx technically, would argue the community is not universally aligned behind the phrase latinx

Having said that, I think the term Spanish Heritage month is quite fine.  People are too much caught up in phrasing and take it way too seriously.  The point is to recognize a group or culture and all the fighting over the right phrasing is just, to me, missing the point.

This isn't about you, OP, but in general.  You know, because eventually, someone will come along and have a problem with the phrase LatinX eventually and not for any of the right reasons.

  • Oh, yeah, and one more thing...gamer community having an unchecked racist aspect, that registers.

Game companies want all the money from 'recognizing' certain groups, but also don't want to check racist people because it's really all about the money.  The inclusion of certain characters from Respawn absolutely reeks of marketing first.
