Will we lose skins and heirlooms when cross progression releases?

As someone who has every heirloom(most on console) a few on PC I have a fear of losing thousands of dollars worth of skins with the cross progression because of the rumor that it is not going to merge but will be able to pick one account or the other. This is a fresh worry with the new collection event. Should I buy everything on the account I don’t use and won’t use very often cause it has the majority on it and not get to enjoy it until cross progression or would I be safe to buy it on PC and get to enjoy it until cross progression comes out and just get all my other heirlooms and skins with that update? I only ever started making all my new purchases on PC and switched once I learned cross progress was being worked on but this picking one account or the other and them not merging threw a wrench in the mix. I wish they were more transparent. I honestly don’t even see why it would be hard just have all players make a master account like how battle net or epic does and then people can link max one account per platform and the system could just see what’s unlocked between the linked accounts and show up on the master account that would be used going forward. I don’t even think most people are worried about duplicates(although something for them would also be easy to do)that much just losing everything from one account or the other. But even with duplicate skins crafting materials would be easy compensation and for heirloom duplicates just heirloom shards. Am I in fear for nothing? Has there been more updates on this since that rumor?

  • @DEATHLOK242 I remember reading a comment from a dev, that said account merging probably will never be a thing on Apex. They said something about the way the game was set up initially, and they cant change that aspect after the fact. I don't remember when that was, or the exact wording though

That was on the release of apex they said cross progression wouldn’t be a thing cause of how they coded it but the demand was high so they started working on it for a long time and announced that they were working on it but the last rumor was that it would be more of a pick your account going forward and then everything is tracked as one from that point but no official announcement of if that’s how the cross progression will actually work.

  • @DEATHLOK242 could you imagine the class action cases they would have to deal with if they merged your accounts but not your purchased content, ie deleted some your paid for skins or BP content. At the very least they will have to merge skins, badges, accolades, etc to avoid a serious issue.

Essentially when you bought a skin you entered into a contract with ea. They cannot unilaterally withdraw from that contract.

Imo the will have to have "the great merge" which will allow a player to merge multiple accounts and merge the content of those accounts,. In fairness though they should only allow the level of the new account to be the highest level account old account.

I also do not see how they can merge accounts without the owners explicit permission, so it may be an option to just continue as is unless you choose to merge.

Their rule on smurfing allows at least one other account, so they cannot change that now.

@OldTreeCreeperThey've said that merging is not going to happen as merging is too complex a task. Plus think about people that doubled up on free packs. A person with two level 500 accounts would have recieved twice the packs as the person with one account. They aren't taking anything away from anyone by not merging. People made multiple accounts and spent money on those accounts by choice. Those same people could keep going with both accounts.

All that will happen is each account will have a cross platform number like warzone. You will be free to log in with each account on any platform.

@DEATHLOK242 They did back track on the cross progression and are working on it. All evidence that's been found points to having to pick one account but you never know. I wouldn't plan on it and if it happens it's a bonus.
  • @hayhor that's why I mentioned by choice in my post 😃

I'm not sure it matters about the 2 level 500 packs as the pack contents are already owned by the player, so just no duplicates when merging, and it's not as if the player played both accounts at the same time and the option to spend time playing on 2 accounts, rather than one, is open to every player without fear of a penalty.

  • I posted this in the general discussion and it's my take on cross progression.

So I guess the profit numbers have been out for awhile now. Respawn grossing a billion dollars a year with Apex is pretty amazing so for that I'd like to congratulate Respawn and Apex for doing an amazing job but who are the ones spending the money and who are the ones benefitting from the changes respawn makes? I want to talk about cross progression. A serious talk, I want to see where peoples heads are at with this and if they are ok with it.

I, like many others, switched to PC but not before I paid a fair bit of money and grinded for the loot I wanted. The way I looked at it was I enjoy the game and understand it's free, so my way of supporting the game was to pay some money and in return I got a cool little thing, like a skin.  The same could be said for badges people may have earned, some of which are incredible difficult.  All the rumours surrounding cross progression say it will not be a merger. Not only do I think that this isn't fair but also lazy. I've recently talked with somebody that works in this field. They don't work for respawn or EA but they have a good sense as to how these things are done and know how they are done. He told me that yes it is possibly to merge accounts however the task of merging millions of accounts including accounts within accounts, for example 2 or 3 accounts on PS4 and a steam account, is a huge undertaking. Is it possibly, the short answer is yes. So If I know it can be done I guess the next question is why should it be done. The only people that this cross progression update will primarily effect are the ones who have switched. How many people did that? I don't know, but I would bet the numbers are higher that you or I would think.

I can understand that there may be or are issues in the sense that buying apex coins could result in problems with different platforms which could get very messy or even lead to legal issues, however, I don't understand how this truly factors in or is an excuse. For example although I've never played fortnite I hear there is a confusing problem when it comes to zbucks in that the zbucks do not transfer over platforms yet the skins do. I hear Warzone has done the same or something like it. Either way this may have been a lesson learned from each respective platform that this is not a way to do things but I'm still not convinced there is no solution.

Another angle to this problem that has been brought to my attention is why respawn, or more specifically EA,  would give up an opportunity that allows you to pay twice for something? If you switched to PC after grinding on console, then you, me, and EA all know you are not going back to console. EA will gladly, if you are willing, take your money for the same thing you had already purchased on console. That is the part that really really bugs me. In the beginning I was more than willing to send my money to respawn because I thought this game was worth backing and still do to some degree. In return I got a cool little gift, a token of appreciation, at least that's how I looked at it. Now we see they are making a billion dollars a year. Billion. Nevertheless, to those whom are some of the most loyal fans, those who switched platforms and continued to support, those who will be the most effected, will be put in a very unfavorable position to either buy what you've already purchased or have your money essentially wasted. No explanation, no feedback, no nothing. It just sort of feels wrong. It feels like Respawn is saying shut your mouth and take what we give you. I don't remember feeling like this when I first started playing Apex. There was a lot more back and forth between the players and the developers.

We are not streamers, we are not youtubers, we are normal everyday joe's that love the game and just want our stuff that we paid for. I don't think a good answer to that is that you will still be able to access it if you play the other account. We all know we will play one main account and that is the account we want our stuff on. We've given Respawn a billion dollar a year in revenue, knowing that this can be done, shouldn't respawn be doing better. I think so. What do you think?
  • @ematt84 I find it highly amusing when they put out the "we've listened to the community" in a news update, it's used almost like an opposite corporate version of plausible deniability....

Have to wonder who they have actually listened to, shareholders perhaps.

If fortnite can do it qed.
