1080-TI fps randomly capping to 60 in game

Hey guys,

have a great custom build that hasn't given me any issues on literally every other game I've played.

However in Apex my fps will randomly cap to 60 out of nowhere.

I average 200+ FPS for the majority of the match but then sometimes several times per match it will randomly swap to a capped 60 fps.

Alt tabbing will fix it until it randomly decides to cap at 60 again.

I'm currently running all settings on low with the command line fps unlock active.

(+fps_max unlimited)

Important specs:

Gcard: 1080-Ti

Procs: 7700k

Monitor: 144hz (ordered a 240hz to see if that helps at all)

I've tried changing to all sorts of settings, removing the command line fps unlock, and also self capping at 144 fps. None of these had any effect and the game will still randomly revert to a 60 fps cap at least 1 or 2 times a match.

It's not a mistake on my in game fps trackers part as you can immediately tell that the fps has more than halved.

Have no idea what to do to fix this and have since tried other games and not experienced this issue.

(BFV, Bioshock Infinite, etc.)

All still run 200+ fps as usual

Solved the problem myself for anyone else experiencing this. It has to do with the windows 10 refresh rate lock. While running obs or I assume any other recording/streaming software on a 2nd monitor windows 10 will try to lock the framerate to the refresh rate of the secondary monitor. In my case that was locking my fps in apex to 60 as my secondary monitor is a 60 hz monitor. The quick fix is to run obs on the monitor whose refresh rate you would like to use in game. I will update when I find a more feasible solution.

  • If you're running the game at 1080p, then you don't need to have everything on Low Settings with those specs.

    I'm on a Ryzen 1600 + RX580 8Gb, and I run 1080P Medium, hitting 100-144FPS, depending on the situation.

I've also unlocked my FPS (look online for a command line you can insert in the Advanced Settings under Game Details (viewing APEX Legends within the Origin Launcher).

Alternatively, I did notice an FPS Cap whenever scoping....I assume this is linked to having a further draw distance..so FPS Cap is necessary.

If you're playing at 1440p, then I can understand why you play on Low Settings.

Double-check there aren't any other 'FPS Cap' limits within your Nvidia Control Panel too, that may be conflicting with the game's own FPS Cap.

Can't really say much else without more info as to exactly when this 60 FPS Cap Limit happens..

    Hi man,

I have the same problem but the thing is that it happened even if my streamlabs is closed, is it normal ? It didn't do that before only since the horizon heirloom update, now i have a 60 fps cap in the menu but when i go in the firing range it fluctuating in the high fps range for a moment and then go back to my initial fps cap wich is a stable 235fps cap, i have the command in steam command line to cap fps.

    Heya @Jon_Heuuss

The recent update has made it so the lobby FPS is capped to 60 FPS, this is done so players with lower-performance GPU's can cool down in-between matches to improve overall performance.

This might of course cause some fluctuations when getting into matches, though it should settle on time.

As far I'm aware, there isn't really a way to adjust this either, so it seems like the lobby fps is hardlocked to 60.

  • Ooh okay i thought about that but i didn't find a setting to adjust it so i thought that it was a problem on my system. Thanks for the precision !
