Apex is Breaking my Microphone Input for ALL Programs

This has to be one of the weirdest bugs I've faced regarding Apex.

When I play Apex, all my other programs stop receiving microphone input.

Specs:

OS: Win 10 Enterprise

CPU: 7950X

RAM: 2x32GB 6400mhz

Drive: 2TB NVME (Windows and Apex on the same drive)

GPU: 3080ti

Monitor: 1440p 165hz

So my specs should be over and above anything Apex should be demanding. While playing, CPU utilization is <15% while GPU utilization even on fully maxed settings is not even breaking 80%

My microphone is an XLR microphone going to a Steinberg UR22C plugged in via USB. No other sound inputs.

While playing I have discord open, firefox, apex, nvidia broadcast, and sometimes OBS.

The issue will usually start 2-3 minutes after launching. All other programs steop receiving nvidia broadcast input. It's like nvidia broadcast just dies. No errors are put up on nvidia broadcast's side. Nvidia broadcast just doesn't output anything anymore, but only while playing Apex.

After maybe 30 minutes of this, my microphone (the steinberg) will stop being detected by my other programs but apex will continue reading it for in-game chat.

The problem is particularly bad because my microphone picks up a lot of background noise so nvidia broadcast helps a lot in filtering that out. I also don't get any notice from discord that the input drop. Discord (and OBS) believes there's still a microphone connected but it just stops receiving anything.

This only started happening with the Wraith heirloom recolor patch.

I've tried repairing apex twice, and fully reinstalled discord, apex, and nvidia broadcast. I've tried two different versions of nvidia broadcast even. This issue is straight up consistently only happening while I play Apex.

I've disabled the Allow exclusive control ticks on both my microphone inputs (Steinberg and Nvidia broadcast).

It's one of the weirdest bugs I've encountered with Apex. I have absolutely no issues with my microphone inputs when not playing Apex.

I don't even know what else to try while troubleshooting. I'm honestly at a loss. Windows is still picking up sound from the microphone but apex is blocking other applications from receiving it.

  • Bump, this issue is absolutely atrocious as it's not just impacting gameplay but other programs as well

To clarify things, have you tried using an USB microphone plugged in to your PC directly, without using the Steinberg UR22C?

Would be nice of you to try this.

  • Don't have other microphones on hand.

Most of the time the issue starts with nvidia broadcast first so I think it's some bad interaction between apex and nvidia broadcast on my system.

Bit of an update, if I manually restart nvidia broadcast once the error occurs, things keep working. The problem is restarting nvidia broadcast is a good 10 second process where I have to tab out. I also can't react to anything as the game lags during the launch of nvidia broadcast.

The error still only occurs when I'm in game, but will not fix itself until I restart my programs.

As a sort-of fix I've been restarting nvidia broadcast in the drop ship every game. The error will still occur towards the halfway to late game point and then sometimes again before the end.

This means that having a script to restart nvidia broadcast on a timer is not terribly useful for me.
