Apex Legends "Error Reading Pak File: Short Read"

Hello. I have just recently switched from using Origin to using steam for Apex Legends. I was sad to find out that the game crashes and I receive the error message below.

The game ran perfectly fine before, and I just want to know what's going on and if there is a fix. Thank you.

  • Something similar is happening to me except with a different file. Its a legendary octane skin. I believe that short read means that the file isn't the size it should be. Uninstalling or verifying the integrity of the game files won't work

  • I tried re-switching to Origin and it was running all the way until I attempted to link my steam profile then I constantly started getting the same error message.

Hey, @Electr0101  @PaubloEscobaro make sure that all drivers for windows are up to date, also worth to reinstall the GPU drivers for your PC.

You can also try to do a clean boot to see if there any programs messing with APEX and turn off any overlay programs for example Discord or Nvidia experience.

Can you add a Dxdiag so we can see what hardware and drivers you have?

Let me know if this works or not for you. 🙂

  • @EA_Atic Hey, I am having the same issue. I have updated my drivers, re installed the game, and even uninstalled origin. I am still having the issue. any ideas on what I could do?
  • Also have the same issue. have read online that you have to delete a corrupted file. But that file doesn't exist in my apex folder.

  • I had the same problem with a file, i followed the file path in the given error and i deleted the file, the weird thing was that the steam integrity check didn't notice that the file was missing but now the game works just fine. The file path was " C:\Users\<YourUsernameHere>\Saved Games/Respawn/Apex/assets/11/store/dl_store_s08_r97_s02e01_legendary_01.rpak "

  • I also have the same problem, how to fix this? I already follow the steps and it not solve anything.

  • Delete said file. Literally just read this thread and then decided to delete the file since nothing else worked, and it stopped crashing. If it's a big file then I don't recommend it, but the file that stopped me from playing was only like 300 kb, so I went and did it.
