Black Screen After Launching Apex Legends

Hi,

I'm having an issue with Apex Legends where the game won't load properly.

When I launch the game, the initial loading animation appears normally, but after that the screen just turns black. The game doesn't seem to crash, and I can still see it running in Task Manager, but nothing happens even if I wait for several minutes.

This started recently, and I was able to play the game normally before. Has anyone else experienced this or found a solution?

Thanks!

  • Hi Dada12132,

    Thanks for reporting this.

Since the game is still running in Task Manager after the screen goes black, let's try a few basic troubleshooting steps first:

    • Make sure your graphics drivers and Windows are fully up to date. If the issue started after a recent driver update, you can also try rolling back to an earlier driver version. You may also want to perform a clean reinstall of your graphics driver using DDU.
    • Verify/repair the Apex Legends game files:
      • Steam: Library → right-click Apex Legends → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
      • EA app: Library → Apex Legends → Manage → Repair.
    • Disable any overlays or third-party programs that may hook into the game, such as Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, or other overlays.
    • If you're using any GPU overclocking or undervolting, try returning the GPU to its default settings temporarily.
    • Restart your PC after making these changes and try launching the game again.

If the issue continues, could you also let us know whether you can still hear the game audio or see your mouse cursor when the black screen appears?

It would also be helpful if you could share your GPU, Windows version, and whether you're launching the game through Steam or the EA app.

    Thanks!

    You're welcome!

Please give those steps a try when you have a chance. If the issue continues, feel free to come back and let us know what you've tried and whether anything has changed.

Hopefully, rolling back the driver or performing a clean reinstall will help resolve the black screen issue.

Thanks, and we'll be here if you need any further help!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the steps you mentioned, including rolling back the driver to a previous version, and see if that helps.

I'll come back and update the thread if I manage to get it working.

    Thanks again for the help!

    Thanks for the update.

Since verifying the game files and updating to the latest graphics driver didn't help, you could also try rolling back your graphics driver to a previous stable version. In some cases, the latest driver may cause unexpected issues with the game.

If possible, I would recommend performing a clean installation when rolling back the driver as well.

Please let us know if the black screen still occurs after trying an earlier driver version.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm playing through Steam, and I've already tried verifying the integrity of the game files, but it didn't find any issues and the black screen still happens.

I also updated my graphics driver to the latest version, but that didn't seem to help either.

When the screen goes black, I can still hear the game audio in the background, but I can't see anything. I have to close the game through Task Manager.

I haven't tried reinstalling the driver with DDU yet. I'll give that a try and see if it makes any difference.
