I have a sneaky suspicion that this is in relation to the steam name bugs that's been going on for the past week. There have been pros on stream dcing during ranked. And I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say that this needs to be moved to high priority among anything else.
Multiple clips of streamers, content creators, and even myself have dealt with the issue within the past week. I passed what I knew about the issue to EA Mako, how its replicated, and even a resource page with hundreds of different images to add to users names. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I'm almost certain that this is the case. Please pass it on so this may be resolved before it gets abused early into the split.

Community Manager@Tradables Good call, I didn't even think about it.
There was a temporary fix to the name issue recently so that they will no longer display for other people in-game. If someone's name has images they'll just show up as null squares instead. It doesn't work for your own name, though, so if you have images in your name you may still run into crashes. Removing them is the best option to stop that from happening.
