FPS Drops & Performance Instability

Hello, my ign is Damagi and I have returned to the game recently for the upcoming season. I have also just recently upgraded several parts within my PC.

Here are the parts that I used

Motherboard: GIGABYTE B760 DS3H AC (INTEL)

PSU : CORSAIR RM750e , 750 WATTS

Ram: CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 RAM 4x16GB 6000MHz CL30

CPU: Intel Core i7 - 14700F

SSD: Samsung 980 PRO SSD 2TB (M.2)

GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3090 24GB

Monitor: MSI MAG274QRX 27" (240hz)

If you need additional information, I will be happy to get that to you as soon as I am able.

After returning back to the game, with my current PC, I was expected a much smoother experience than any of the time I have spent previously. Unfortunately, after redownloading the game, I was met with a very poor experience. After testing the PC with other popular online multiplayer titles, I was surprised that in the other games, I was having none of the issues I am currently having with Apex.

In Apex:

In the menus and in the lobby, FPS and performance is stable and there are no issues. Queue into a match... the legend select screen and the champion screen look normal. When the screen shifts to the view in the dropship, my frames load and stay between 20 and 30 fps.

Upon landing, the fps does increase, but there is an underlying issue that makes the game run very poorly that it makes it unplayable. I have discovered that if I look to the center of the map from any position, my frames will drop extensively. If I face the outside of the map, they will stabilize. The frames, when stabilizing will be 160+. When performance drops, looking towards the center of the map will drop the frames between 60 fps and 90 fps. This rapid change of frames based on the direction you are facing, is very difficult to accept. In a fast-paced game like Apex, it is very distracting when the game runs this poorly.

My initial thoughts were that it was a rendering issue. Looking online, I followed guides and videos to try and fix the problem

These are the things that I tried, but did not make any impact:

  • Adjusting Resolution & Scale
  • Lowering all Graphics Quality video settings
  • Turning V-Sync off
  • Turning G-Sync off
  • Adjusting Nvidia Control panel settings
  • Adjusting Windows settings (Game mode, Turning off Game Bar, Turning off excess programs)
  • Uninstalling the game and reinstalling it (Both Steam and Origin)
  • Running in administrator mode
  • Overclocking and/or undervolting / Returning the PC to default settings across the board
  • RTSS capping framerate and uncapping the Apex Legends application's framerate
  • Uninstalling Nvidia GPU drivers & Clean install using DDU
  • Activating and Deactivating XMP profile for the RAM
  • Utilizing the different settings of the Perfdrive, on the Gigabyte B760
  • Changing Physx from auto to CPU or GPU
  • Several launch options tested

and more that I cannot remember

Observations:

Temperatures in both the CPU and the GPU do not exceed thresholds, or show any sign of overheating.

While in-game, CPU utilization hovers around 20% while GPU utilization is minimal at all times

Frames drop when looking at a large portion of the map. This frame drop even occurs when standing in front of a wall.

When standing in the center of the map, the performance of the application suffers when facing any direction.

In short, I have attempted to fix or diagnose the issue myself, and it is very frustrating that it is not something that I can find an answer to online. It appears that many people have similar issues, but this one is not so easily solved.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

  • SOLVED!

I decided to take a leap of faith and get a different Motherboard. This solved my issue.

I wish I could explain what exactly wasn't working about it, but i was unable to diagnose.

For reference, my new Mobo is MSI 790
