High ping and packet loss, only in game, only on Apex Legends

I have been having trouble with Apex since I signed up for a new fibre plan with Shaw, I live in Whistler, BC. I get 150ms up and down with a 16ms ping when I do a speed test.

I assume my issue is to do with the game and this internet plan, as when I connect to my landlord's internet (Telus), the game runs fine, and my signal to his router is poor.

When I first load into the game, on the first screen it shows low ping (23-28ms) and 0% packet loss on all of my local data center options. As soon as I'm in the lobby I notice issues - it takes around ten seconds to show me how many Apex coins and crafting metals I have in the top right corner, the HUD stutters when it loads in, and the character animations are laggy. When I load into an actual game, I get a ping of 500-1200ms, and 80% packet loss. The game is unplayable.

Can anyone help me to troubleshoot why I could be experiencing these issues with my internet plan? They run the same remote tests and can't help me, and they refuse to send out a technician, because "it looks fine from their end'

This issue is only with Apex Legends, I have tried Warzone and CS:GO, and they run fine. The only game I want to play is Apex Legends.

I have tried re-installing the game, and various data centers - no joy. I have tried EA's standard troubleshooting as well - no luck there either.

Thank you in advance if you can help me.

  • The solution for my problem was manually splitting the signals on my router (it's usually automatic). When I switched to 2.4G the problems all went away! But on 5G I get massive ping and up to 99% packet loss.

If you have a modern router with a lot of automatic functions, consider splitting the signals and using 2.4G. The best solution would be to wire straight into the modem, but that's not always an option.
