In principle, this is exactly what auto sprint does. If you want to run, then press shift once, but if you stop run - you will go on foot.
BUT in the realities of the game you constantly loot, look around, stops in front of an obstacle, strafing etc. AND if you want to use movement capabilities on 100%, you should hold the shift button. I think that this is the reason why many players wanted auto sprint, because you always stop and should press the shift button.. It's cool, but in my case, I can’t hold the button with my little finger for a long time
