That definitely sounds like abnormal hardware usage. I wonder if that executable might be corrupted. When you have a chance I'd recommend running the Windows System File Checker to see if it identifies any possible issues.
You can find more info on how to run the System File Checker over at the Microsoft support website. Let me know how it goes when you can.
