It is my understanding that you can appeal a ban a number of times.
I have text chat and audio chat switched off and I don't use headphones. I use the ping system to communicate. No way I allow toxic people into my life. But if you do, you cannot retort in kind. It is not "defending" yourself. Not only do you lower yourself to their level, but you are doing what they doing and risk a ban by doing so, which happened in your case. Do not reply and report them.
