Did suppression actually make for a better experience?

Hear me out, on alpha release BF3 the suppression was way over the top and wasn't a fan at all, but imo at the later stages of the game and comparing to the experience in 2042 I kinda miss it actually.

For me it feels like it makes a lot of sence in a Battlefield game, it should be more about slower pace gameplay, outsmarting your enemies and picking the right tool for the job i.e. picking a scoped/slower weapon for further ranges etc.

The amount of ways and times you are constantly plinked in 2042 is at a disgusting level imo. And the times you have every advantage possible but yet lose the fight like you didn't have a chance to begin with.

Weapon range, accuracy, damage should be WAY lower in next Battlefield game or add suppression back.

What did you all think about suppression in BF3? Good bad?

  • In Battlefield 1 the suppression causes the weapon sight to move around and increases the spread. After playing a lot of Battlefield 1 I've come to realize I find suppression annoying and unfun.

I agree the gunplay in BFV and 2042 has become too laser beamy. Resolving this through carefully designed recoil and a small amount of spread is probably the best solution. Which would encourage burst firing over long range.

Rocket Jump Ninja recently did a video about all the annoying mouse movement and visual recoil in Apex Legends and how it causes player frustration. I found his opinion interesting.

  • @doubleome Suppression takes out a huge chunk of the skill out of "Shooting" part of the "Shooter" game.

One player must not be able to alter the accuracy/recoil/vision of another player simply by shooting first.

    This encourages 2 things
1 Camping. Because knowing you shoot first gives you HUGE advantage, you will be camping even more than now. BF5 MMG camping meta had it on full display. The amount of campers in dark corners with MG42s 200 round belts was absolutely insane. This was too easy to pull off, so average jimmies did just that.

2 Spray and pray gunplay, aka lowering the need for a better accuracy than another player. In BF5/2042 and in BF4 after multiple reworks of a suppression system, you MUST have good aim in order to compete with others. There is no way around it. You're either confidant in your aim, or you get mowed down by someone who is better than you are.

True but mostly referring to the suppression in BF3, in BF1 it was mostly confusing and imo not necessary cuz the old weapons fired like old weapons plus low ammo capacities

In BF3 suppression didn’t lead to camping and when it did the higher TTD allowed to get cover and figure a way to kill the camper. BFV and BF2042 people don’t even need to camp in order to produce and seemingly “unfair” engagement.

I agree a well balanced recoil, spread, accuracy system is superior and leaning towards to slow pace gameplay but I have little hope of ever seeing that happen again

For me Battlefield 3 was the last Battlefield you actual battled other players, everything after is just battling the game itself.

@doubleomeBF3's "High" TTD was due to an awfully low server tickrate. It was something like 10Hz or 15Hz compared to 45Hz in 2042 and 60Hz+ in BF4/5

So half of your shots just didn't register properly.

BF3 has exact same guns, mostly the exact same damage numbers.  3-4 shots kill up close, 5-7 shots at a distance.

@UP_LordPlumberBut we begged Dice for better tickrate but it didn’t improve anything imo made it worse or something else made it worse.

Bf3 had 60hz servers at one point i am pretty sure didnt it?

2042 experience is more consistent compared to bf3 for sure but consistently bad isn’t something they should strife for lol

  • BF3 Suppression and to a lesser degree, BF4's was too high and BF1 was a tad low.

For me, somewhere between 1 and 4 would be ideal.

Suppression adds another layer to the game play and makes 'fire and move' a viable squad tactic if an enemy location is know.  The amount of times that I have been shooting (and hitting) a sniper only for him to OHK with his one and only shot is obscene.

It can also be used as a 'balancing tool'.  As has been said, BFV and BF2042 weapons are a tad too accurate but should we make all weapons slightly less accurate all the time OR some of them less accurate under certain circumstances?

And before anyone says it, Suppression offers no 'reward' for bad aim other than perhaps surviving a firefight. Beyond that, nothing.

@Trokey66 I don't remember that the BF4 suppression did anything other than add some graphics effects on the suppressed, and these effects could be tuned down with the right client settings.

    Can't speak about BF3 or BF1, I didn't played either more than 24h.
  • @doubleome

I never was a fan of the suppression system in Battlefield. I have always liked being rewarded for good aim and not being penalized for it.

I'm not a fan of bullet spread for the same reason.
