If I were Dice right now this is how I would alter the Specialists to hopefully keep the community happy whilst maintaining their initial idea.
I actually enjoy the freedom of choosing any weapon on any class, don't get me wrong in previous games it has always been nice to know roughly what gun someone has based on their class. However, given the scale of maps I think opening that door to all specialists is a good one. In previous games games like BF4 you had the universal weapon types (carbines, shotguns and DMRs) available to all 4 classes. I don't think it would effect gameplay that much allowing players to pick any primary weapon.
Here is what I would change, I would give each Specialist a role or class. Mackay would be Assault, Falk Support, Boris Engineer and Casper Recon. Within those classes your second gadget slot would be only available in that class. Rather than give everyone the choice of any second gadget like in the beta (health, ammo, launcher, C5, ect) make it so each class only has access to specific gadgets. Assault Specialists could have under barrel launchers, HE launchers and maybe ammo. Support would have all health related gadgets and maybe smoke launchers. Engineer would have repair tool and all launchers, rockets and anti vehicle gadgets. Finally Recon would have all spotting gadgets, spawn beacon ect.
Doing this would mean you wouldn't know their primary weapon but then you could easily identify their locked special gadget and then roughly know their second gadget based on the Specialists class. Then obviously they have to do something like a colour change or outfit change to the different factions. I would even go further and have a Russian specialist that mirrors a US one with the same gadget and trait. Sorry for the essay and thanks for reading if you got this far 🙂
