How to Enable Secure Boot with an AMD RX 580 GPU That Requires CSM
If you have an AMD RX 580 GPU and want to enable Secure Boot (which usually requires UEFI mode and disabling CSM), you might run into problems like a black screen or BIOS access issues. Here’s how to fix it:
1. Check if Your RX 580 Supports UEFI GOP
- Some RX 580 cards, especially those with modified BIOS (like mining cards), may not support UEFI GOP (Graphics Output Protocol), which is needed for Secure Boot.
- Use GPU-Z to check if "UEFI" is listed under the Advanced tab. If it’s missing, your card might not work with UEFI boot.
2. Update the GPU VBIOS
- If your card doesn’t support GOP, you might need to flash a new VBIOS:
- Backup your current VBIOS using GPU-Z.
- Find a compatible UEFI-enabled VBIOS from TechPowerUp’s database (make sure it matches your exact GPU model).
- Flash it using AMDVBFlash (for AMD cards).
3. Try a Different Display Port
- Some RX 580 models only show UEFI BIOS on specific ports (like the bottom HDMI or DisplayPort). Try switching ports after disabling CSM.
4. Use Integrated Graphics or Another GPU Temporarily
- If your CPU has integrated graphics (like a Ryzen APU), use it to enter BIOS, disable CSM, and enable Secure Boot. Then reconnect the RX 580.
- Alternatively, use a newer GPU (2019 or later) to set up Secure Boot, then switch back to the RX 580.
5. Downgrade Motherboard BIOS (If Possible)
- Some newer BIOS versions force Secure Boot. If your motherboard allows it, downgrade to an older version that doesn’t enforce this.
6. Try Enabling Secure Boot Without Disabling CSM
- Some older motherboards (like certain ASRock models) let you enable Secure Boot while keeping CSM on. Check your BIOS settings.
Final Notes:
- Flashing the VBIOS can be risky—if unsure, consider replacing the GPU with a newer model that fully supports UEFI and Secure Boot.
- Some monitors may not display the UEFI BIOS properly—try a different display if you have issues.
