[INFO] BF2042 Patch 8.8 (May 27) – Secure Boot Requirement for Supported Systems

With Update 8.8.0 on Battlefield 2042, we will require that Secure Boot be enabled for PC hardware that can support it. This will provide you with a higher standard of trust and safety while you play select EA titles. As cheat developers keep evolving their tactics, we're stepping up our game, too.

To keep Battlefield 2042 fair and fun for everyone, we're strengthening our defences, especially against cheats that try to sneak in during the Windows boot process. This move supports our Positive Play commitment and helps ensure a level playing field for all players. If you attempt to load the game following Update 8.8.0 without Secure Boot enabled, but are on a piece of hardware that supports it, you will be prompted with a message stating that Secure Boot is required. Secure Boot is a feature available for Windows 11 and Windows 10 devices, and you can learn more about how to enable this functionality via our EA Help article here.

(‼️At Your Own Risk‼️) How to Reset Secure Boot if Battlefield 2042 Does Not Recognise It

Before you proceed, consult your motherboard manual for precise steps. BIOS/UEFI menus vary by manufacturer. EA is not responsible for any damage or loss of data.

  • ‼️This is at your own risk.‼️ Incorrect changes to BIOS/UEFI can render your system unbootable.
  • Verify that Secure Boot, not just UEFI boot, is required.
  • Ensure your system boots properly with CSM (Compatibility Support Module) disabled.
  • ‼️Consult your motherboard manual‼️ for precise steps. BIOS/UEFI menus vary by manufacturer. EA is not responsible for any damage or loss of data.

Steps to Reset Secure Boot

  1. Enter BIOS/UEFI Settings
    • Restart your PC and press the designated key (usually DEL, F2, ESC) to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  2. Locate Secure Boot Settings
    • Navigate to the Security or Boot tab.
  3. Assess the Current Secure Boot State
    • If the Mode is User, you can usually enable Secure Boot directly.
    • If the Mode is Setup, follow these steps:
      • Disable Secure Boot (if it says Enabled).
      • If it shows Standard, switch to Custom.
      • Then switch back from Custom to Standard, and accept factory defaults.
      • Enable Secure Boot.
  4. Optional: Reset Secure Boot Keys
    • In some BIOS/UEFI versions, you can select Reset/Delete Secure Boot Keys under the Secure Boot settings.
  5. Save and Exit BIOS/UEFI
    • Save your changes and restart your computer.
  6. Verify Secure Boot Status in Windows
    • Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
    • In System Information, check the Secure Boot State field.
      • If it says On, Secure Boot is enabled and recognised by Windows.
      • If it says Off, revisit the BIOS to adjust settings.
      • If it says Unsupported, your hardware may not support Secure Boot.
  7. Restart and Launch Battlefield 2042
    • Launch the game to check if Secure Boot is now recognised.

Same problem and this is not cool the secure boot.

Is done to execute original files of windows, because many people is using windows copy not activated.

But secure boot also it has a big problem: People using HYBRID HDD/SSD so never can execute Secure boot on computer, so to play Battlefield 2042 or 6, you need it it's like 70€ the game +100 a new SSD.........

Trash update to add that on their games, leaving forever EA has a real and very bad support for gamers , also looking depth, there is no plenty games on EA to play.

  • I love how you guys at EA just deciced lets force users to run with secure boot, What if my system is not a Windows and does not support Secure boot at all?
Or if I use Windows with dual boot Linux and turning secure boot on would kill my Linux partition?
And how dare you not state this as a first thing on Store pages? "Please dont buy the game cuz we don't care about your privacy, We just want money for poorly optimized clusterf, that cheaters still manage to enter, i mean really, Is it even worth it to lose players and customers just for money of the few thousands fanatics that buy the game just because of brand?
    Srsly
Well fine I am refunding I am unable to play because of reasons, so I will not.

    Hello,

I purchased Battlefield 2042 when Secure Boot was not required. After changing my PC, I can no longer launch the game due to this new condition.

The way EA chooses to fight cheaters should never become the user’s burden, especially when it requires modifying critical system settings on personal computers.

Secure Boot is designed to protect users from rootkits — not to enforce anti-cheat systems. Whether it’s easy or safe to enable is irrelevant; forcing players to activate it abuses a personal security feature for corporate purposes.

Some users have encountered issues even when following EA’s own instructions. EA takes no responsibility for any potential damage and provides no guarantees or support if something goes wrong. This is unacceptable. Players should not be forced to risk system stability just to meet EA’s needs.

Our system settings are not EA’s business.

    Therefore:

    1. I ask for a way to play Battlefield 2042 without Secure Boot.
    2. I ask EA to offer alternative options in future titles like Battlefield 6.

Same here. It just started today. It´s heartbreaking, but if EA continues with these practices, i will go to another platform and pay por another game that doesn´t demand this kind of **bleep**. It´s a shame.

  • I installed Nvidia drivers on Linux and found out 90% of the video options are missing from Nvidia control panel on Linux.

No image scaling options or 3D settings options. No options for G-SYNC either.  The Nvidia app also isn't available on Linux.

Once I realized how many Nvidia features are missing on Linux I decided it's just better to dual boot Windows.

Secure Boot is not going to stop cheating, they themselves were in bad shape with this because on day 1 of the BF6 beta there was already a hack and it wasn't detected, they banned it because the guy exposed himself publicly, for me it's just marketing, the beta was using excessive CPU in a way that no AAA game does, the question is, is it a game? or is it a way to collect information? I only see that secure boot forces me to use only windows and on my computer I have more than one system installed and I can not activate this nonsense designed only to verify the EFI of windows, I will have to be entering to activate and deactivate a useless and stupid option to play a game, it takes away my desire, what's more I bought the bf2042 for € 100 and it did not require secure boot and now it does, that should be illegal, meanwhile the consoles have nothing to worry about since they will continue cheating with their modified controllers and cronus zen that will not detect javelin no matter how much they want to sell us, they always sell the same idea instead of selling a game and it always ends in failure because they do not comply, nothing works, I have all hope lost in the online game, it does not matter if it is bf6 or another, apex is unplayable and they do not fix it.

I’d buy this in an instant if it worked on the Steam Deck. Anti-cheat shouldn’t punish potential customers. It’s a crazy business model to have. Besides, people will still find a way to cheat anyway.
