Battlefield 6 needs to focus on what makes Battlefield unique
Battlefield 6 needs to focus on what makes Battlefield unique
I want to offer some constructive feedback on the current direction of Battlefield 6.
I believe Battlefield 6 has a very strong foundation, but at the moment the game feels increasingly fragmented. There are many playlists and temporary modes, while some features and game modes that historically suited Battlefield extremely well are missing or underused.
Instead of continuously adding more small or temporary modes, I would prefer Battlefield Studios to concentrate on a smaller number of strong, permanent Battlefield experiences.
- Bring back Frontlines
Frontlines was one of the most dynamic modes Battlefield has had.
The constant push and pull of the frontline created matches where both teams naturally switched between attacking and defending. It concentrated the action without restricting players as heavily as Rush or some smaller modes.
A modern Frontlines mode in Battlefield 6 could work extremely well with the current destruction, vehicles and larger player counts.
2. Bring back Battlefield V’s Fortification system
The Fortification system from Battlefield V deserves another chance.
Being able to reinforce captured positions with sandbags, trenches, barriers, stationary weapons and other defensive structures gave objectives more meaning.
It also complemented destruction extremely well.
Destruction without rebuilding can eventually turn an objective into an empty open area with almost no cover. Battlefield V solved this problem elegantly: the environment could be destroyed, but players could then create new defensive positions.
Capturing a flag therefore became more than simply standing inside a capture zone. A squad could capture an objective, fortify it and prepare it for the next attack.
This is exactly the kind of sandbox interaction that makes Battlefield different from other shooters.
3. Consider bringing back Outpost
Outpost was another interesting Battlefield V concept.
Capturing locations, constructing radio towers and upgrading them created an additional layer of strategy beyond simply capturing flags.
A modernised version could combine territory control, construction, destruction and squad play.
4. Offer Infantry Only versions of the major modes
There does not need to be a completely separate game mode for every type of player.
Instead, the major modes could simply have optional Infantry Only variants.
For example:
Conquest
Conquest - Infantry Only
Breakthrough
Breakthrough - Infantry Only
Frontlines
Frontlines - Infantry Only
Outpost
Outpost - Infantry Only
This would offer variety without creating dozens of fundamentally different playlists.
Maps or sectors would obviously need to be adjusted for infantry gameplay rather than simply disabling vehicles on very large maps.
5. Restore proper Portal bot backfill
Portal should once again be allowed to fulfil its role as Battlefield’s sandbox.
Servers should be able to start with AI soldiers filling empty slots and gradually replace those bots as real players join.
This would be especially useful for less populated regions, community experiences and older or less popular modes.
It would also make it much easier to keep community servers alive instead of requiring a nearly full lobby before a match becomes enjoyable.
6. Reduce playlist fragmentation
I understand the need to experiment with new modes, but constantly adding and removing playlists can fragment the player base.
I would rather have a smaller number of excellent, permanent modes than many temporary experiences.
Battlefield already has strong concepts available from previous games. Conquest, Breakthrough, Frontlines and Outpost provide very different experiences without abandoning the large-scale Battlefield formula.
7. Reconsider the development priority of REDSEC
I understand that some players enjoy REDSEC and I am not suggesting that their game should simply be taken away from them.
However, I would strongly prefer REDSEC to become a secondary experience rather than a major development priority.
Battlefield players primarily came to Battlefield 6 for Battlefield.
If development resources are limited, I would rather see them invested into large maps, Portal, classic Battlefield modes, fortifications, destruction, server functionality and improvements to the core multiplayer experience.
REDSEC could remain available and continue receiving maintenance and necessary balancing without constantly competing with the main Battlefield experience for development attention.
Battlefield does not need to imitate other shooters.
Battlefield already has its own identity.
Large maps, vehicles, infantry, destruction, squads, changing frontlines and sandbox gameplay are what make the franchise special.
Features such as BFV Fortifications and Frontlines actually strengthened that identity.
Instead of continuously creating new modes, I would love to see Battlefield Studios take the best ideas from Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V and develop them further.
Battlefield 6 does not need more ways to be another shooter.
It needs more ways to be Battlefield.
