All Hype, No Substance (So Far)

Hey everyone,

Not trying to be the fun police here, but is anyone else feeling déjà vu with all this Battlefield 6 hype?

Sure, the trailers look impressive, with explosions everywhere, jets doing aerobatics, chaos in spades, and frankly, some great sound design. But once you scratch the surface… what exactly are they showing us that matters?

Because we’ve been burned before (looking at you, 2042), and right now it feels like they’re going big on cinematic flair, but quiet on the stuff that actually keeps a Battlefield game alive.

Where are the Battlefield staples?

Server Browser: One of the most essential features, and still no confirmation. Matchmaking-only kills community building and long-term engagement. I'm not talking about portal mode, I mean a true server browser.

Private Server Hosting: The backbone of BF communities. We need the ability to host and customise games, not rely on whatever matchmaking gives us. Give me private servers, and I'll give you my money, EA.

Commander Mode: The tactical layer that made squad play meaningful in BF2 and BF4. Why does it keep getting left out? Sure, it's not for everyone - but it had its place and was something I enjoyed thoroughly when I felt like flexing my strategy skills.

Open VoIP: Launching without basic team communication (again) would be ridiculous. Open VoIP by default, with the option to opt out, lobbies have gone soft, and as a result, the communication died.

Clans/Platoons: You keep saying "you and your squad". I don't just want to play with my squad, I want to bring the whole platoon. Again, enable community features and players will come.

Destruction: What Are We Getting?

They’re hyping up destruction like it’s brand new tech. But let’s be honest true destruction peaked in Bad Company 2. Entire buildings could collapse, walls could be blown open dynamically, and it was different every time based on what you and your team did. From what’s being reported so far, this new destruction in BF6 is mostly:

  • Pre-modelled
  • Repetitive
  • Looks impressive, but plays predictably

That’s great for visual consistency, sure, but it’s not the same as having unique, unscripted destruction that changes how a round plays out. It looks like we’re getting style over substance again. Give me the kind of chaos where every match feels different, not “press C4 here to open the same wall every time.”

This won't kill the experience, and I understand there are technical hurdles here. But why do I feel like game development has regressed.

DICE, Have You Learned Anything?

2042 launched missing half the features it needed to function. It took over a year to almost fix, and many players never came back. We don’t want a hero shooter. We don’t want more fluff. We want Battlefield to feel like Battlefield again.

  • Server browser
  • Persistent, private servers
  • Commander mode
  • Fully dynamic destruction
  • Meaningful squad roles
  • Proper comms
  • Community tools that last longer than launch week

Until we see confirmation of any of this, I’m not buying into the hype. Explosions and trailer music are cool, but we’ve seen what happens when they lead with marketing and forget the core.

I see the streamers and content creators playing what appears to be a polished vertical slice of the game. They're all saying the same things; it's uncanny, as though it were a script to read from.

I remain cautiously optimistic. We've been burned too many times. The gameplay looks good, but if that's all Battlefield 6 brings to the table, what else is there?

What do you reckon — anyone else waiting for real answers?

Yeah, the more I watch and see - the more I notice that there's really not much to see. The visuals and audio are great, but I'm really starting to notice a lack of anything other than that.

A different perspective: I am playing Battlefields since BF1942 a from the points mentioned, nothing has been a staple for me in any of the BFs. As long as I can select a mode/map I can play on, I do not need the server browser nor private servers (but as far as I know, both may be a thing in Portal, with full XP). In fact, I find it much more comfortable as I do not need to go through the servers list to find what I want, check the pings, if there is enough people, etc. first. The commander mode was never my favorite. Not much interested in an open-by-default proximity chat as it usually ends with people not being aware of it and it's then full of random household sounds. Clans/platoons are nothing I cannot live without.

About the destruction - although I agree it sometimes looks odd (at least from the videos shown so far) and is something that definitely should be more polished to the release, I guess it's all about the technical things - you do not want to kill the network with sending individual debris positions, etc. and you need something that can be uniformly reproduced on any client at the same time. Prefabs where you can just tell "break this wall this way" over the network and the client will do all the spectacular stuff independently have their benefits.

Just watched his recent review and meh… a lot that was mentioned here he does not touch on at all… and he claims to be a player since BF1942.  I agree with his overall take, but he mostly states the obvious and doesn’t ask hard questions.  I do like his stuff usually though.

If you want an honest opinion of a content creator, I’d suggest watching Flakfire. He’s literally a teacher and does content creation as a hobby. I’ve met him a few times and he’s a real down to earth guy, he doesn’t sugar coat it and will give you his honest opinion backed with facts.

He’s been covering Battlefield for about 15 years and I actually witnessed Poolshark vouching for him for the Ronku program when he was literally unknown in the Battlefield community. 👍

  • I don't trust Dice. There were a lot of missing details and things they just seem to refuse to acknowledge. They really just went on and on about destruction, which isn't a game play loop. I want to know more details of how they improved the game in meaningful ways. The reveal just didn't come across authentic to me. Felt like people being forced to sell their game rather than being excited about it. With a production of that size, I guess that's expected. Felt very corporate.

NEVER trust content creators. It's their job to find the fun for themselves, and then to convince others to play as well. Even if they're not being paid, they have to essentially force themselves to play in order to make content. The market is mostly dog water right now, and then so many of them act like every game is this amazing thing, or will be the next big thing, or it's trash one week, then redeemed the next. I can't stand watching anyone besides maybe Skill Up to get some gaming news.

On a side note, it was crazy to see Dice's marketing budget spent in a physical way this time around. All those content creators playing the game in person, wow. Lots of money going into that, just crazy to see and process the scale of this game.

The one thing that sounded really interesting was Portal. I'm really interested in that now.

I absolutely agree with everything you expressed. There are still many things to discover, as a veteran of the saga, these trailers have not yet convinced me.

I’m in the same boat. Very skeptical and not buying into the game until we actually get some answers on these points.

One thing I’d like to add is the abomination called “limited time game modes”. Just give us all the modes and make them available indefinitely. I don’t want EA to decide when I’m going to be able to play TDM or Domination.

Yeah, my wallet will remain closed until such time said elephants are addressed. Gameplay looks fine, I just don't see any of the supporting systems or tools I'd like to, and without them, I don't see a future for BF6.

  • Yeah, déjà vu here as well.  Particularly with so little go on.  As a playtester, I feel confident that this game is better and will be better received than 2042.  However, there is not much more behind the curtain in context to many of things you have mentioned... and that has me concerned as well.

October 10 is still a bit out, so there is still plenty of time to communicate stuff they have not revealed, but if they do not begin to address some of these major elephants in the room I will have to assume they don't have anything... which is bad.  Quite bad.

Overall, in terms of just gameplay, I still think October 10 is too soon.  There are still many issues to be tuned and dialed in just the basic gameplay... especially vehicles.  If on top of that they communicate nothing as to a "main" server browser, platoons, commander mode, etc... I dunno.  The beta will probably be well received, but I also predict many bugs and unpolished stuff to come out as well.  Which again, 2 months... we will see!! lol

    See you on the Battlefield!

Many critical and correct points made by this poster.

The destructions in the finals is the best for new titles

Most games nowadays doesn't have that many innovations like back in the day and slowly making the game less realistic and less detailed and killing a lot of features on the way, because they want to make games fast but not make it good(highly detailed high quality)

If the devs back in the day have the hardwares from today it would be great.
