Are helicopters too strong right now?

I'm a player from Japan.

Here in Japan, we sometimes see helicopter players getting close to 100 kills in Conquest, and honestly, it makes the overall experience pretty frustrating.

Of course, part of me also thinks, "Well, maybe we're just not bringing enough anti-air weapons." But even with that in mind, helicopters still feel way too oppressive from an infantry player's perspective.

I've even started playing mostly on maps without helicopters because of it.

Helicopters are already naturally strong vehicles. Compared to jets, they can maneuver in much tighter spaces, and compared to tanks, they have massively better mobility.

So I understand why a good helicopter pilot can dominate a match.

But as someone who started playing Battlefield with BF1, helicopters honestly give me about the same level of frustration as the Heavy Bomber did back then.

I don't really have a specific balance change to suggest.

From an infantry player's point of view, though, helicopters basically feel like flying grim reapers with complete freedom in the sky.

Even if you bring anti-air weapons, they can just flare the missile, leave for a bit, wait for everything to recharge, and then come straight back.

I just wish infantry had a slightly more reliable way to defend themselves against helicopters.

Bring back a Flieger Faust equivalent from BF5

Skill based weapon and should be able to one shot helicopters

  • Too low for lock on they should basically be on the ground.  Dumbest mechanic in the game.

Thanks for the replies! It’s honestly reassuring to know that some players outside Japan feel the same way.

I don’t think helicopters should be easy to shoot down. I just wish infantry had a more reliable way to force them away for a while, and I also think flying extremely low should come with a bit more risk.

Maybe things like reducing a helicopter’s mobility when certain parts are damaged, or making small-arms fire do a little more damage?

I’m not sure what the best solution would be, but I’d like there to be more ways for infantry to at least pressure helicopters without needing half the team to switch to anti-air.

I agree with you; helicopters—especially attack helis—are way too strong against both tanks and infantry. Unfortunately, the game favors them too much; I know people who have stopped playing or are quitting because of this. You have helicopters on large maps with no mobile anti-air to counter them head-on. Plus, mobile anti-air seems to have been neglected: the cannons have low damage, short range, and high bullet spread, and the missiles take forever to lock on—let alone actually hit anything, lol. The anti-air equipment is full of flaws, and there’s a lack of options. Unfortunately, it feels like the devs don't care about us—only about helicopters. Both the attack and scout helis are way too fast; they need to be nerfed, especially the attack heli's gunner seat. Sadly, I doubt they'll do it. What's worse is that anti-air needs buffs across the board, but they won't do it because they'll claim it would unbalance matches—yet they ignore the imbalances helicopters are causing. It’s sad to see such a huge company treating its customers this way!

I agree that the mix of too low for lock and quickly recharging flares is just too much, especially for the mini bird.

For one thing, going low should mean using terrain to hide. Right now, the bird can just go nap of the earth on flat terrain, take vey little risk in doing so (the attack and transport choppers risk facing RPGs, but not a fast flying mini bird), and even get to do a gunning run while doing so.

I don't mind choppers not going down as flies, but in that case there needs to be a way to push them back for a little while without the entire team having to switch to anti-air engineers.

The easiest solution would be for flares to recharge much slower. Then the pilot would have two choices: staying low to the ground for an extended period of time, which is dangerous, or leaving for a little while until the flares are back.

I also think the mini bird needs to be much more susceptible to gunfire. Its main defense is speed: it's infuriating to see them hover when there's no engineer around, because gunfire does too little to really worry them.

The too low for lock is probably the worst feature of the little birds tactics .You fire a shot they flare and you miss all good reload to have another shot no need for flares just drop low recharge flares .If they were forced to run for cover out off range would be better this would at least give the infantry a chance to manoeuvre  .The better pilots often never get above the radar threshold

I can relate to this experience. Helicopters are also among the most challenging enemies for me, especially since the Little Bird was introduced.

In my matches, there are usually two manageable outcomes. Either the helicopter becomes annoying enough that several teammates switch to Engineer and focus on shooting it down, after which the match becomes balanced and enjoyable again.
The real problem occurs when there is a skilled pilot but not enough players equipped for anti-air duty. In that situation, the helicopter can establish almost complete air dominance, and it becomes extremely difficult for infantry to do anything about it.

Since the Top Gun update, I have also found it challenging to take down jets. I use the Anti-Armor Training Path with the IGLA, but their flares often seem to recharge just in time for my second missile, so I am rarely successful alone. I probably still need more practice with the timing. ;-)

Don’t give up! Switch to Engineer, ask your team to help, focus on objectives that provides a Mobile Anti-Air vehicle. Deny enemy pilots freedom over the battlefield.
