Totally agree, i only started playing online with bad company 2 , but i did play bf2 online back in the day couple of times at a friends house, i remember it fondly, especially the special forces expansion. :) .
As for reference, a link to a post on reddit with a comparison from previous battlefields map sizes. Many might have already seen this on reddit.
I was shocked about the size of certain maps, look where the biggest map from bf6 is 'ranked', (excluding fort lyndon), Even firestorm is a downsized shell from it's former self.
Although operation firestorm wasn't one of my favorites, (i liked it the most in bf3).
This is really interesting comparsion, thanks for that.
