Feedback on Weapon Naming and Battlefield Identity

Dear Battlefield Team,

I’ve been a fan of the Battlefield series since BF3, and one of the things that originally drew me in was how authentic and immersive the experience felt. Iconic weapons like the FAMAS, M16A3, or AK-74M didn’t just function well in gameplay, they added personality and realism to each loadout, and helped define what the Battlefield identity meant to many of us. Being able to recognize and geek out over real-world arsenals was a big part of that magic in BF3 and BF4.

I want to say upfront that I appreciate the work you’ve put into BF6 so far. The weapon models look good, the handling feels solid, and it’s clear a lot of care has gone into the overall presentation. From a technical and gameplay standpoint, things are shaping up well.

That said, I’ve noticed that the shift toward fully fictional weapon names; such as the B36A4 or TR-7—makes it a bit harder for me (and many others in the community) to connect with the game on the same level. Without that sense of recognizable realism, the experience can feel closer to something like a more arcade-styled shooter. Personally, I’m not looking for a COD or Destiny-like vibe, I’m excited because I want to play Battlefield.

This sentiment has come up repeatedly on Reddit and community forums, where longtime fans have shared similar thoughts. Many of us really miss the recognition factor that made earlier titles so memorable and immersive. Of course, we understand there are legal, creative, and balance considerations involved, and we genuinely appreciate the effort to move the franchise forward.

With that in mind, I wanted to respectfully ask: is there any possibility of introducing real weapon names in the future, perhaps as an optional toggle, a setting, or even as part of future seasons? Even an optional solution would mean a lot to longtime players who value that connection to real-world military hardware.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, and for all the hard work you continue to put into the game. I’m looking forward to seeing how BF6 evolves and truly hope it can fully capture that classic Battlefield spirit again.

It does certainly make sense. Saves money and avoids any issues people might have with supporting the arms industry.

Now you mention it being common, I seem to remember skimming an article about it when Fallout76 came out, as Bethesda did something similar.

ElliotLH I think this is exactly it, in order to prevent having to pay for licenses to use real manufacturers names they use fake names.
It’s common practice in the gaming industry.

  • I've seen people mention that it might be to avoid paying weapons manufacturers for using the real names. I don't know if that's correct, but it does make some sense to me.

  • They give you 3 loadout slots for every class and vehicle(Mostly) and they don't even let you rename that...
