I always see a chat in the top left of screen during a Battlefield 6 match. But don't know how to chat back on it or open the chat. How do I do that?

Plug a keyboard into your xbox. Hit J, Space bar, Type your Message, and hit Enter. That's how I do it. And then I resume shooting with my mouse, on Xbox. But, hey, you can shoot with your controller and use a keyboard (wired or wireless) to write in chat at the same time, if you want.
I use a chat pad connected to my controller. So I have room on my table for my bong.
That reminds me that I dug out my old chatpad the other day, but forgot to actually try it out. I'll need to give it a blast tonight or tomorrow.
