They always were virtually useless. They always did have "bloom" that made them land randomly around where aimed. They always did zero splash damage. You can hit a destructible house over and over, and it doesn't even damage the roof.
I think no one talks about them because no one uses them because they are useless. You just use them a bit to do a challenge, then never again.
