PC: Game crashes upon entering any game mode

After the winter offensive update, when I try to enter any game mode, the game crashes to desktop and fully crashes steam. This is issue also happens for a while after the CA update as well.

I am not sure why this game goes through phases of being not playable. I have the recommended specs and I am able to run the game smoothly when it works, so it appears to be an issue with the updates to the game.
