Random Game Freezes - Temporarily Locks Up PC

Ever since the REDSEC update i've been getting random game freezes at random times.

These freezes when they occur cause the game to stutter, all sound to be muted, and if in a Discord call it causes my voice to become robotic. The Entire pc becomes unresponsive for about 5-10 seconds.

If the lag happens for too long, the game will crash out and close with no error.

This happens on both the EA App version of the game and the Steam version of the game. I have spent a week trying different things to fix it, running the game on the lowest graphics settings, disabling REFLEX and other specific things to no avail.

I've run various other modern games for hours and can't reproduce it anywhere other than in Battlefield 6.

My system is high-end, specs are:
GPU: Nvidia RTX 4090 (base clocks, no overclocking)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (not overclocked)
MOBO: ASUS Crosshair X670E HERO
MEMORY: 64GB Corsair Dominator DDR5 (EXPO Profile)

One other note, i was streaming the game today and the lag spike happened, causing a huge system freeze larger than usual. Windows event viewer shows an ERROR level event in nvlddmkm (Nvidia kernal level driver). Left my pc unresponsive for about 10 minutes.

Tried all of the usual things, driver cleanup with DDU and clean install, reinstalled the game, verified files etc, etc.

Some other notes which may be important:
Running the game at 4K resolution, fullscreen windowed, I have 2 monitors running at 160Hz.
I seem to frequently, but not exclusively, get these freezes when in-game, and I hit "Enter" to open chat.
Also seems to occur frequently shortly after getting to the main menu
Also seems to occur frequently when transitioning between the end game to the next game
I play with an Xbox Elite 2 controller connected via Bluetooth.

  • I managed to fix this issue by completely reinstalling Windows. Some may say that is overkill, but it was quicker than wasting more time debugging 😅

I have HWiNFO, system temps are fine, pc is in a LIAN LI DK07, all very low, CPU freq is within normal range too for all cores/threads @ around 5500MHz.

I did keep Latencymon running while I played for 30 minutes just now, when the freeze/hang happened, it reported wdf01000.sys as the highest interrupt and DPC routine execution time. Everything was perfectly fine and low before the random freeze.

Given wdf01000.sys being reported, it made me think of the Windows power plan. set to high-performance mode, but "Energy Saver" was turned on.

Testing now with this disabled, and have not had a freeze in the last 10 minutes. I suspect Windows Energy Saver is doing something in the background. Will report back and update if this has been fully resolved.

Following up, the power plan and energy saving made no difference. Random freezes still occur. I had a bigger-than-normal freeze today that locked up my entire pc for about 10 minutes, forcing me to use the reset button.

Just played a few games of Battlefield 2042 and it ran flawlessly, so I suspect it's something that changed in the REDSEC update or the Javelin Anti-Cheat for BF6 that my PC doesn't like 🤔

LatencyMon alternates between wdf01000.sys (Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime) and nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver) as the highest latency/execution time.

    Here's what Google AI suggests:

Wdf01000.sys is a system file related to the Windows Driver Framework, and an error involving it often indicates a problem with a faulty or outdated driver, frequently associated with USB or other hardware. To fix this, try updating Windows and drivers, checking for hardware issues with a system diagnostic tool, and disconnecting external devices like USBs one by one.

Try disconnecting all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard.

AnthonyKinson it's recommended to try Windows power plan on balanced and enable Xbox Game Bar.

This allows Windows core parking to work. Although I think core parking is broken for BF6, so you might just want to try Game Mode in Ryzen Master app.

Edit: Apparently this is for 3D cache CPUs, but I would still try it.

AnthonyKinson nvlddmkm.sys appears to be the Nvidia graphics driver.

Try running the video card at stock speed. In Nvidia Control Panel click on the help menu, then click Debug Mode.

Tried balanced power plan, game bar is enabled and is by default, i never turned it off, i don't use Ryzen Master, CPU and GPU are all running stock, nothing is overclocked.

  • After trying various things beyond what any normal person would try - rolling back bios version, disabling EXPO on the memory modules. Uninstalling everything but the game, cleaning out all drivers, removing all devices... the problem still persists. It's escalated slightly further now in that the game will just silently crash and exit when it happens.

One thing I have been able to do to consistently reproduce it in a match, is opening chat, or typing in chat. 9 times out of 10 it causes massive freezing with a 50/50 chance the game will crash silently and close silently, and I have to relaunch the game. This doesn't exclusively cause it, but it does cause it to happen.

  • I managed to fix this issue by completely reinstalling Windows. Some may say that is overkill, but it was quicker than wasting more time debugging 😅
