Special Operations Squads Concept

I heard that sometimes DICE devs will pop in on these forums to see what people are talking about/suggesting for ideas in the next Battlefield. So thought I'd share an idea for you all and any devs popping in (as unlikely as that is). I was thinking that since it's sounding like we will be seeing higher player counts in BF6 (supposedly around 128 players) I think that would leave enough room on both teams, depending on squad sizes, for there to be designated Special Operations squads. Let's say squad sizes are four player squads. Two squads (8 players on a team) are specifically designated as Special Operations squads. They have unique squad identifiers in the UI/Menu and maybe even their character models have a more elite/operator aesthetic to them. Basically, your team will know who the Special Ops squad members are. So this idea is heavily predicated on the Commander role coming back (not holding my breath but I'm hopeful). Essentially, the Special Operations squads on either team are given additional objectives to the primary ones with the rest of the players. So in Conquest, the primary objective for everyone is still to capture flags but the Commander can assign his team's Special Operations squads additional objectives to destroy or dismantle enemy support assets i.e. artillery, radar, UAV stations etc. This will handicap the enemy team's Commander and the individual systems will remain offline until an engineer can repair what was destroyed or dismantled. BF2 had a very early version of this idea but anyone on a team could go and destroy enemy assets. I'm thinking that only the designated Spec Ops squads would be able to accomplish these objectives. I think this would be a cool way to introduce different ways of playing and add new gameplay layers specifically to the standard Conquest game mode. Let me know what you guys think and add in your own ideas that you believe could go well this concept. See you on the battlefield.

I like the idea, but I dont think it will work IRL. You COULD add an extra class like in BF2 the SPECOP, and let players decide ingame if they wanted to use it and if they wanted to use it in a team. You could then, if a whole squad was playing that kit, give extra xp for "class play" or what ever you would call it.

In BF2 the specop was only really fun because they had grappling hooks and explosives  IMO.

The fastpaced gaming of the BF games in general doesnt really promote careful planned games thus the arsenal is already at your disposal in the other classes as I see it.

    (silencers, flashbangs and c4).

@0ld_yell0w all the commander is doing is to assign a spawn point to a squad, it is up to the squad to say what classes they use.
  • @0ld_yell0w @DingoKillr I posted this thread on reddit as well and someone actually suggested that idea also. Having a designated class like BF2 would be a good idea, my only hang up with that is everyone in that squad would be running with the same kit instead of having a medic, support, etc. I definitely enjoy hearing people's thoughts on this concept because it's interesting to see how differently people perceive the pace and overall team dynamics in a typical match of Battlefield. The people I play with are usually more about strategy and tactics so I think we'd be predisposed to playing as a Spec Ops squad. But I certainly see your point. I appreciate your addition to the conversation!

And yeah Dingo, again, that's a fantastic idea! Tying the Spec Ops squad to a HALO or amphibious spawn point is genius.

Sounds good idea. What if squad leader of spec ops squad would get access to spec ops gear? Others can help him out. Or alternatively everyone would get third gadget slot for timed explosive charges more powerful than regular C4 capable of taking down assets.

@Teal_Pipo_Fredo Thanks for your comment! I like that idea a lot! Either the squad leader or everyone in the SF squad having additional gadgets would be cool. Something like a grappling hook that can be used to scale structures or more powerful explosives to take assets/structures down are good examples of what I'd like to see. @DingoKillr suggested something similar where the Commander can issue special equipment to the Spec Ops squads. Definitely a solid addition to the overall concept! Thanks for sharing!

I guess you can add jetpacks too for a Special Ops squad.

If BF is going to use current Military equipment, I just saw a bunch of Royal Marines training with jetpacks.

  • @DingoKillr yeah the tech is definitely getting there. Although from the sounds of it, DICE isn't going to be including jetpacks in BF6. Maybe of they do a futuristic DLC?
  • I like this idea because it involves bringing back commander mode and also how something like this would mean that squads are taking the orders given within the game seriously enough to carry them out.  Which is why I also unfortunately do not see an idea like this working anywhere outside of servers where platoons are mostly playing.  These kinds of ideas seems to be wasted in random matches in this series.  I can already see a team that is struggling to maintain control of the objectives as people ignore them losing 8 players to special operations objectives that even if completed makes no impact on the match while the rest of the team is still doing nothing to maintain control of the regular objectives that are there.

This is one of the worst feelings when playing Battlefield to see your actions no matter how well your squad plays do nothing to bring the overall team closer to victory.  It is the same reason why in Battlefield 1 that the behemoths typically had zero impact on the match as they were just another distraction given to a team that wasn't focused on the objective of the game mode to begin with.  In a similar way the behemoth takes players away from objectives that were already being poorly contested by the team that received it.

For an idea like this to work, the people playing will have to * DICE has a system in place to motivate players to do that more than ever before.  It is actually what this series needs more than anything else.

Edit:  I think that anyone should be able to destroy the objective as in BF2.  Respect for the chain of command should keep the other players away from that objective which is more realistic.  Maybe there should be a point deduction for the squads that execute the special operations orders when they were not told to.

  • @Skill4Reel Thanks for adding your thoughts! I agree with your assessment that in normal public lobbies you usually won't get great team coordination for an idea like this to really get maximum utilization. However, I think that same logic applies to just about every other team play mechanic that they have in the game, yet DICE still adds those mechanics so that the people that want to take advantage of them can do so. For instance in my experience, the commarose communication wheel is rarely used but it's awesome to have for those who enjoy using it. In BFV, the asset point system where a squad leader can call in artillery or a V2 rocket are rarely actually used but DICE kept them in because you will get the occasional squad that does utilize that feature effectively. I think a Spec Ops squad feature would fall into that category where, yeah, it probably won't always get used but when it does, it can have a massive affect on the direction of the battle. I'm of the mindset that it's usually not a bad idea to give players more options to play as a team, even if the options are seldomly utilized fully. As to your idea about all players being able to destroy objectives, I think maybe all players could be able to destroy enemy assets but the objectives wouldn't be marked on the map and you wouldn't get points for destroying them... And maybe it takes longer to destroy them than it would as a Spec Ops squad member. So only Spec Ops squads officially see the objectives, it's easier for them to destroy, and they get a generous amount of points for accomplishing the objectives.
