WARNING: TROJAN DETECTED IN SOME OF THE APPLICATIONS THAT CLAIM THEY WOULD FIX T

I just wanted to post this to warn people since I found a trojan in one of the binaries that claims to patch the game. I was able to fix the problem related to graphics without using this suspicious binary that could have infected my computer with a trojan.

If by accident you came across this guide which is by the way referenced by some answers here on EA, BE CAREFUL! DO NOT FOLLOW IT!

The dangerous site is here, [[https]://cncnz[DOT]com/features/technical-support-help-guides/installing-command-conquer-red-alert-2-yuris-revenge/]

The site suggests installing [Medstar’s fixed TUC launchers] as Administrator. DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR RUN THIS!!!! It contains a trojan called Trojan.GENERICKD.45247054 and neither the site nor the application actually makes it clear that there is a trojan. It doesn't matter, you should not install it since it's not needed to fix the game.

To fix the game's graphics' issues on Windows 8+ assuming you have Origin's C&C Ultimate Edition, follow the below steps and do not follow anything else if you do not have proper protection on your system:

1-  Go to the directory where Origin installed the game (Usually : C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Command and Conquer Red Alert II)

2-  Set game.exe and ra2.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.

3- Then, you can use this link where I personally hosted the files required for the fix: https://ln4.sync.com/dl/d0afebac0/2pcsh7fz-yew6z5iu-sjdftcnh-q2z2and6 . This link contains the ddwrapper.zip which you will hear about on other sites and forums. However, the problem is that the website where this zip folder is not safe, so I downloaded it and scanned thoroughly using best anti-virus software available and found it clean. Anyways, to be safe, use the link I provided where I put the scanned file in a public directory so anyone can use it. At least that is safer rthan using bitpatch website.

4- Extract the zip file contents and put them inside [C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Command and Conquer Red Alert II].

5- Go to aqrit.cfg and change the value of "ForceDirectDrawEmulation " to 1.

6- Save the file with the changed value and try to play the game.

The above has fixed for me the game and it no longer freezes, crashes or shows incorrect graphics.

I wonder when the lazy people in EA will at least have the courtesy to protect their customers and patch the freakin game so we don't have to hack it to run properly on modern machines!

Stay all safe and enjoy the nostalgia :D

UPDATE TO THE ABOVE FIX:

After I performed the above fix, the game was still unstable a bit and crashed from time to time. I added few more steps that stabilized the game entirely. Do the following once you have already done the above steps 1 to 6:

  1. Go to [C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Command and Conquer Red Alert II]
  2. Find a file named RA2MD.INI
  3. Open the file with Notepad.
  4. Under the [Video] section, add the following line: VideoBackBuffer=no
  5. In the same [Video] section, you will find screen width and height; change them to match with your current screen resolution (e.g. 1920 * 1080).
  6. Save the file with the changes.
  7. Go to Origin.
  8. Right click Red Alert 2 in your games library and edit game properties.
  9. Make sure Origin in game is disabled.
  10. In the advanced tab, you will find an empty field called command line arguments.
  11. In the command line arguments, add the following argument:  –Win
  12. Finally, save the settings.

After I did also the above, changes, the game worked so smoothly and never crashed ever again and it even worked with resolution of 1920*1080 without any complaints.

I wonder when will ever EA patch the game so we can play it without all the hoops and loops above.

I hope this will be useful.

I just scanned the launchers with Malwarebytes and it says it's clean. I'm fairly sure that's a false positive, or a "reputation-based" detection, which are 100% worthless, since they just mean the scanner doesn't know the file, and nothing else.

What did you scan it with, and what exactly did it claim?

Oh, and if you want to link to DDWrapper, maybe just link to the author's actual website instead of some dodgy-looking generated link.

    http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html

The only thing "not safe" about it is that it doesn't use https. Which is really not the horror you make it out to be... lots of older sites still use http.

  • I have used Bitdefender. Anyways, people should not use something that is not necessary since those binaries often claim they make life easier while slipping a trojan in.

The steps I have indicated are sufficient without installing any binaries, clients, etc...

I personally, don't like EA and their incompetency sometimes, but this time, I believe better not to do something totally risky and unknown.

As for http, the risk is rather whether or not the site has been hacked because old sites are rather vulnerable to poisoning or some geek trying to hack them.

I know you're the person who originally posted those sites and links.

It is not personal, I'm trying to protect the young gamers who are not aware from infecting their computers and to prevent the possibility of their info/credit cards getting stolen and frauded or blackmailed.

A trojan is a trojan, there is zero benefits of installing something that contains a trojan since it only compromises the security of the device and sends back information to the host.
