it wont let me run the game in windowed mode and i have tried several things

What things have you tried?
and are you in the situation I was? When you start the game, does the screen go black, but you can hear the music? if yes, try opening another window (like a browser or notepad) and then making that new window cover only part of the screen (smaller than full screen). If you can see the Dragon Age window behind it (menu and marching Soldiers) than i would try doing all the stuff discussed in this thread.
Primarilly, going to your profileOptions and setting Windowed Mode there, and then try reloading the game 1-3 times.
even with the method we figured out here, it still freezes on launch for me sometimes.
