I read the previous thread on this, which simply stated that you're supposed to bash the box, not the door. HOwever, I don't get the option to do so.
I also am unable to save the weapon merchant (Segritt?) from a burning building, again because I have no bash option when on my warrior companion (either Cassandra or Iron Bull).
I would really prefer to not lose my smithing supplies or my weapon merchant. Is this a bug that I can fix?
You just attack the box, instead of "bashing it". Just do you basic attack on it a few times. For the people you need to help, you actually just get near them and hold down your use key.
That all said, saving them is mostly pointless.

SpoilerAll the NPCs you save get replaced by someone else anyway, and just show up later as filler NPCs.
Well, you do get a bit of influence for saving them. And I suppose there's the immersion angle.
I was pretty clueless at first, too. I had to replay the mission two times until I realized what I had to do. Especially when you're on a mage it is kinda difficutl to crash environmental items - at least, that's my experience. Your aim is a bit different and your auto attacks are weak. With no game prompt or reaction if you're hitting the right spot or doing the right thing, it's kinda hard to say what exactly to do.
The first time I tried to make my way out of the burning house, I was clueless because when I aimed at the box, there was no reaction by the game showing me that I made any progress or my actions did anything at all. Would be nice if the box pile would start cracking or splintering or something, so you see that you are doing the right thing. It took me too long to crash the box blocking the way inside the burning house the first two times and the NPC died. Kinda frustrating, but it _is_ do-able.
This helped turn this from what appeared to be a simple distraction / time waster into something you could affect. But I'm fairly sure you are hitting the door not the box as there is no way to target the box when you select the attack of your choice. Yes it takes a couple of bashes. And I have just entered and there is nothing there anyway ! I guess I leave Harritt to it and get on with the real task.

I'm having this problem too, I've been attacking the crates, but they don't do anything, if anything all my attacks seem to hit the door instead of the intended target.

You certainly can. Warriors can even destroy locked doors, except for the ones that require 'deft hand, fine tools'.

Keep in mind you can aim when attacking air. If all else fails, an ability can help as well. 'Bash' for instance.

Or just use mind blast. 😉 That's how I save Seggrit now, instead of jumping up to the roof I just stand outside the door and use mind blast to destroy the boxes on the other side, because I'm lazy.
I kind of hate Bioware for making destructible environmental objects, because of course I can't NOT destroy them. 😛
Yeah, that's why my Qunari mage ended up named Adaar Adaar, flame throwing weapon twice over because every box, crate, wagon, stack of wood, etc... gets blasted. Veilstrike does a number on things too - use fade touched to give it to anyone, preferably everyone. It goes off A LOT if the whole party has it. Nasty on enemies too, but boxes, wagons, etc... LOL Nothing or no one can stay standing.
