It feels like they put more effort in to their interactions with each other than it does Rook as a whole. I am entirely disconnected from this entire cast.
I absolutely agree. And i’ll add that what i felt during my playthrough was that the companions were closer to each other than they were to Rook. She (my Rook) was always there for them, helped them, and yet i couldn’t help but feel alienated from them, in a way that i could only explain as a leader/subordinates dynamic that really shouldn’t be there, since they’re basically just a bunch of guys. In DAI the protagonist is a literal head of state, with an army of soldiers and faithfuls, and yet their friends always tried to keep them grounded all the time, by making them feel more like a person (pulling pranks with Sera, playing cards with Varric, Bull introducing you to your soldiers, etc). In DAV i felt the exact contrary, and even the romances felt like some companions were more smitten with each other that they were with Rook. Truth be told, it made me feel really sad, as if i was a stranger in “my own” game and squad. And that’s definitely not something a game, a saga, that mostly resolves around companionship, romance and friendship should make you feel like.

I am so sad for Rook, it felt like social alienation. Like Rook didn't exist at all for them unless the group needed them for something. The literal only thing mentioning Rook with the companions at all was the shopping list! The more I think about this game since finishing it [108 hours btw], the more disappointed I am in the romance and the game in general. Bioware is supposed to be the BEST at this, what happened?? I was waiting 15 YEARS for this moment!

Exactly this. But also:
At first I thought perhaps I was just not into this crew, which is fine, it happens. Not everything is always going to be for everyone, you know?
As I kept playing I realized that’s not the case. It really is how they are handled and that the stories here feel created so Rook has to make major life decisions for actual adults. That is so off putting, unattractive and it is why they feel underdeveloped and not really believable as characters.
The game was fun enough for one play through, but until this kind of stuff is patched I won’t be playing it again.
But hey, the CC is amazing!! So at the very least I have an awesome OC creation tool. :D
