First, I loved playing through Veilguard... once. And this is largely the reason. Not just restricted to romances, the idea of being able to form friendships with various personalities is entirely lacking. I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I say the similarities in progression between Veilguard and Mass Effect are very evident, even if the contexts are entirely unique. Like, as soon as I realized I was playing ME2: Thedas Boogaloo, I knew exactly how to achieve the perfect ending. Not that that's a big leap in logic or anything.
ME2 is a great game, but one I won't ever play again unless I'm starting off a brand new Shepard in ME1 and going all the way through to the end of ME3. Dragon Age has never had that protagonist carries on as the protagonist continuity, which has never been problematic before now.
The lack of social options, including the ones you mentioned, leave me feeling too directed. "No. You don't want to have little tidbits of conversation with your friends.. WE'LL tell you when you talk to your friends." That sort of thing. And the lack of historical connections. Not trying to start any social discussions, but with the presence of Taash and Qunari running everywhere, WHY did Krem not make an appearance?
The mechanics are very fun, and I'm sure glad I played Veilguard, but I'm already feeling about it the way I feel about Mass Effect 2. It's a great vehicle to get me from Story A to Story B with some spectacular moments in between. But by itself there isn't enough available character exploration to keep me engaged playing through as another class, or because I want to romance a different character, or because I had to make the decision between Kaidan and Ashley (as in ME1).
I enjoy the characters in Veilguard a lot for the most part, but as Rook unable to do anything but be generally supportive and go along for the ride, there's not much of a reason to get back into the car a second time.
Also, there's a nudity switch in the settings. Why is that even there? I'm not complaining. I always enjoyed BioWare romances in that they were more suggestive than explicit anyhow. Is there nudity in the game, or did BioWare plan on more then dial back expectations due to reasons? (Again, the similarities to ME2 are apparent.)
My download wasn't even cooled to room temperature before BioWare announced no DLCs to concentrate on ME5. I love both franchises but it seems to me BioWare is the parent with the clearly favorite child. Inquisition felt like I was playing in a really big room. Veilguard seems like I'm playing in a hallway. It's a great hallway for the most part; it just doesn't go anywhere.
Well said! Yeah the nudity setting is utterly useless, and it really does feel like a lot of stuff is weirdly incomplete. Then to say "no dlc because Mass Effect" is insulting. DA games have always had the companions be a core part of the game. Because we can't chat with them at leisure they feel like NPC's.
