Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Unique Chests bugged out and unable to be opened.

@Foxwolfmoon You're awesome. - To clarify; you're saying to continue with my current save - (not roll back?) - and do all quests I can before the Weisshaupt quest? - Will that allow me to do Arlathan Altars? - (Or is that tangentially a part of Heart Of Corruption?). I still haven't done Weisshaupt in my current save.

I don't mind rolling back a couple hours if needed. I'll give what you're saying a shot after work today.

Looking forward to hearing how your test goes. Hoping for the best. It doesn't seem like EA cares too much about this tbh, so it's refreshing to get some help from fellow players.

Cheers mate!

The problem is, some areas are still locked, until well after that. So you still wont be able to get uniques chests and alters.

@Darkwing_Duckie Yeah! No problem asking for a little clarity! 💖

I did everything I could quest-wise leading up to Weisshaupt. The only things I couldn't do were (trying to keep this as spoiler for you as possible but keep in mind that it's hard to explain everything without mentioning at least a little bit):

    - I couldn't do altars. This doesn't impede you quest-wise other than keeps you from getting extra skill points and health points, but you can do them after Weisshaupt. (Will note, that this may make Weisshaupt a little more difficult without those boosts, but you could always farm a bit and beat up some enemies in other areas to help make up for some of that)

    - I couldn't break a wall in the mysterious mansion in the Wetlands so I couldn't explore it, But that quest was still available after Weisshaupt.

    - I beat all of the champions that are part of the Heart of Corruption quest except for the one in Dock Town before Weisshaupt because you need to be able to access a Wolf Altar to get to the area where that champion is. (won't say which one to help prevent spoilers if people want to figure it out, but in fairness I was losing my mind since I couldn't figure out how to get down there and I didn't figure that out until I had my dagger back again lol.) Again that quest will still be available after Weisshaupt And you can get enough champion essences to complete the Heart of corruption quest without doing that one before you go to Weisshaupt (which again I'm going to test if we do that quest before going to Weisshaupt if we can avoid losing the dagger again when going to beat that)

As far as trying to walk your saved back, I thought about doing that as well but the problem is it's happening at different points for different people, so I don't know how far you would have to walk it back, and even if you walk it back, it may just happen again unfortunately based on what I've read from other posts.

    ____

On a separate but slightly related note:
I am going to try that thing I mentioned about beating the boss for the heart of corruption before Weisshaupt to see if that helps us get and keep the dagger after Weisshaupt, But I also have used a few little sneaky money cheats, so I don't know how feasible beating the boss before Weisshaupt Will be for most players if you're playing the game as is. 😅 But I'll still give it a try for testing purposes.

@mrbizk My thought is that if you perhaps do the Heart of Corruption boss fight before Weisshaupt, You don't need the dagger to get to it. So if we could do The Heart of Corruption boss battle before Weisshaupt, Then go do Weisshaupt, which gets you the dagger back, Then maybe We won't face the issue of losing the dagger again post Weisshaupt because that battle would already be done.

The only thing is I don't know if most people would have the strength needed to beat the boss for the heart of corruption quest before Weisshaupt without some sort of cheats. :/ Either way it's all just a theory of mine and it could pan out to nothing if doing that quest before Weisshaupt prevents the Weisshaupt fix from working, But I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to try.

@FoxwolfmoonI don't mind* some spoilers if it gets me playing the game again lol. What you laid out makes sense, I'll def give it a shot later. Thanks for clarifying! - Knowing that the Altars don't change anything except for the +1 skill point & +Health helps me a lot. I figured those would be needed for the "best" ending.

Hope your test before Weisshaupt works out!

@Foxwolfmoon I guess one last question on that may be spoilery: - Is losing the Dagger and getting it back a story related thing? - Or is it purely a bug triggered by certain quests that you know of?

@Darkwing_Duckie It is definitely purely a bug. I wondered the same thing and was like "Did I miss it?" but no, it's not meant to be happening. Especially it happens at random with no prompt and happens again randomly with no warning based on random things people do.

@FoxwolfmoonThanks for the update! - I have a 65 hour playthrough - (But I'm guilty of leaving the game running on multiple occasions for hours on end lol.) - I ended up loading up a 53 hour save and had the dagger. I went right to Arlathan to do the Train A Griffon side quest. - (which is where I noticed it was gone before & posted here; except this time I could actually interact with all the Altars). I kept saving and reloading each time I used it and plan to be overly cautious moving forward in case the dagger disappears again. - I'd rather not have to be so cautious on using the Dagger and saving non-stop. At least I found a point to load where I still have it.

Thanks for your updates though. Hopefully Bioware/EA get this patched soon.

@Darkwing_Duckie Lol! I'm also sitting around 69 hours but I also left mine up and running several times without actually doing anything, so I hear ya. But yeah. From now on, I'm saving frequently and I'm checking Rook's hip for his loop as often as I check my wallet and phone if I'm out and about, haha! I wish you luck and I hope they fix it soon too. It's kinda insane such a game breaking bug hasn't been addressed even if it's seemingly only effecting a small number of people.

I did test my theory (you may see my post above) and it seemingly has worked, but I don't know if it'll stay fixed so... -fingers crossed-

I've heard some people say once it happens once, it effects the whole save file, but I'm hoping not...

@Foxwolfmoon I hear that! - I've been checking his hip for the dagger non stop lol

But yeah I saw that. I'm gonna go ahead and beat the guy beforehand like you said. Worth a shot + being careful like I am should be fine.

I've heard the same. But - Also, in case it helps you at all, I've seen that Autosaves are notoriously bad with this bug. So, when you load a save file, might be worth making sure it's a hard save if you notice the dagger suddenly missing.

This game has gotten a TON of negative review bombs and some valid criticisms, but was firmly on the side of, it's fun (maybe not as "Dragon Age" as I would have liked) & was defending it up until this point. Bad writing I can deal with at times; but bugs like this are definitely a bummer. Makes me not wanna play whereas I had been putting in a couple hours a night - (More than my usual limited play time). One can only hope they fix this or at least make a save game editor to change the value for the dagger if indeed it would be possible.

@Darkwing_Duckie Hard same on the complaint front. My friends haven't gotten this bug and I'm glad for them but I've also been warning them to keep an eye on their loop and what to do if it happens, etc.

But yeah, I like it for the most part except this glitch. But honestly I had super low expectations, lol. This game could have been a glorified pop up book and I probably would have been happy as long as I got a resolution to the story. But game breaking bugs like this really take the fun out of things. And it's not like the bugs in Inquisition where you'd drop through the floor and could just quick travel or load a save to fix it. This is breaking an integral part of the game.

Replying to keep up to date on this.

My dagger bugged out, then I did Weisshaupt, then it bugged out again shortly after. As a completionist, this very much frustrates me, so I am feeling everyones pain.

From my observations, the game is registering the dagger when you use it for the companion abilities, but not for anything else that requires it. To make matters more convoluted for me, the loop of my dagger HAS been appearing on my character, but still the chests, walls, altars and shrines cease to respond. I even created a separate save and used cheats with it, in case that allowed some form of override, but alas, it has not worked.

Certainly hope we can get some form of resolution on this quickly, because, like others in this thread, I'm playing this to chill after long hours at work, and the frustration of a core function of the game not working induces stress, and thus makes me not want to actually play. ☹️

New patch went public. Checked on SteamDB. Let's see if they've actually fixed this bug and address it on the patch notes.

    EDIT:

    • Fixed instances where Rook forgot they already had the lyrium dagger and could not interact with treasure chests and altars.

It's included in the patch notes! I hope this actually fixes the bug!

@ezrylle Seems like the patch has fixed the issue, based on my preliminary exploration. But we should probably be on alert, just in case it happens again.

I'll give the new patch a shot later. - But now I'm torn, go back to my save with the most progress vs staying where I rolled back.

Any idea if the new patch fixed the dagger for save files that have already lost it?

Really hope I can just load the save I have and save 12 hours 🤞

@Darkwing_DuckieIt seems to have fixed the issue entirely from I can see, but I haven't thoroughly explored that. But the 2 save files I have both could access the chests and things since the patch, so fingers crossed it applies to all the saves.

Thanks! I can confirm the bug has been fixed me for me and the dagger is usable. - (It's still not visually there on my character; but I can live with a visual bug if the altar/chest interactions still work as intended) - Very glad they patched this and saved me a dozen hours.
