Permanent Buffs Disappearing: Workaround found

If you are an OCD completionist like me, it has been driving you absolutely nuts to know that the buffs from valuables (+25 Health, +1% Damage, +1% Defense, +1% Resistance, etc...) are lost upon reload / exiting the game. The behavior seems to be better on all platforms as of the latest patch, but many players, including myself, have continued to have problems with it.

I believe I have found a reliable workaround on Steam Patch 3 -- i'd be curious to know what those who play on other platforms can confirm of this workaround as well.

Essentially loading in from a fresh session (i.e. launching the game), you will never have any of the benefits shown in the character menu from valuables previously purchased, despite the items themselves no longer being sold because it remembers you bought them.

Even reloading a save from the menu doesn't restore them. So how do you reliably restore them for each session? Die. That's right, DIE, and then select Load Last Save. For whatever reason. loading through this method instead of through the pause menu restores the buffs and they will then persist the entire session, even if you reload  Check your character menu before and after you die, I have been testing since discovering this tonight and it appears to work every single time.

Persistence pays off. Best of luck in Thedas!

  • Well looks like either Patch 4 did change something, or I just had a bad test in Patch 3 because I swore I tested this, but you actually don't need to die anymore (ever?). Simply loading a save while already in the game world fixes it, but loading fresh from the landing screen they are missing. I captured this in a video here (video has minor spoilers with an Emmrich follower quest and objective that I forgot to mask): Permanent Increase Problem

In the video, I click Continue to load the latest save, which in this case ended up being an auto save. Showed off both my attack stats and health/defense. Other than increases from runes, traits, and gear -- all are base stats. I then load the save right below it called Area Start, showing that MOST of my permanent increases from valuables have returned, including higher attack, higher heath, higher defense, and higher resistances.

I actually bought FIVE +1% resistance valuables, but for some reason getting the last one to show up is tricky, so restoring my valuable buffs using this method only restores SOME of the valuables previously purchased, though on occasion I have been able to get all of them to show up by loading multiple times, but I haven't narrowed down the exact steps required. Either way, I then load the same initial save that Continue would have loaded, showing that the second time around, the increases are still there.

What's unique about the initial load and why does loading an additional time only restore SOME of the valuables previously purchased? Not sure, but the last +1% resistance I bought much later in the save file while my other valuable increases were in the bugged state of not displaying properly, so maybe that has something to do with it.

    Good morning,

Still having issues with this since patch 4. The buffs are gone upon save / reload.

It doesn't appear that EA will fix this issue

Unfortunate. As in the workaround detailed above doesn't change anything for you at all?

Are you perhaps playing on a different platform? If the same platform (Steam / PC), I wonder if whatever causes my final +1% resistance to not be restored through this method still causes others to not restore anything at all.

The more we can narrow down the common factors, the higher chance this does have of getting fixed. I do think it's affecting more players than it would seem, though, because you almost need an eagle eye to spot this happening in the first place.

Since I'm playing on Nightmare with Necrotic / Necrosis damage as the primary source, I need every dang benefit I can get to fight the Darkspawn.

Well I figured out something that seems to be consistent. Loading a MANUAL save, I am missing the last +1% resistance (and possibly others, but those are harder to notice), but loading an AUTO SAVE, I load in with all valuables as expected. Why loading a manual save is any different than loading an auto save is a bit weird. That said, they still have to be loaded from within the game as it doesn't matter what you load from the landing screen, you will never have any of them.

This issue just gets weirder. Can anyone confirm these results on other platforms and/or if you are also seeing differences between loading a manual save and an auto save?
