This just happened to me using EA Play through Steam. I had a hard freeze mid game that made me have to restart my PC and when I tried to boot the game on Steam again it was no where to be found on my SSD. Reading older threads on here and Reddit, apparently this has been faint issue for quite some time as some threads are as old as 2017. Reinstalling now, well see if it happens again. Glad I'm not the only one recently affected by this in recent times as I noticed you posted this a week ago. Has it happened to you again since?
EDIT: Ive come to the realization that it was in fact on my hard drive and Steam just wouldn't recognize that the game was installed.
