EA Desktop Crash on App Launch

Summarize your bug When attempting to launch the application, an application error appears stating: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application." This occurs every time on attempted launch.
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Unsure. It seems it may be a one-off thing, but since there's no steps to reproduce other than run the application, I have no idea how it could be reproduced.
What happens when the bug occurs? Error message, application crash.
What do you expect to see? I'm not sure, I've never seen the EA desktop application 😉 In all seriousness, expectation was to see EA desktop application launch successfully.

I installed the application to default directory. I have not restarted the machine yet, nor have I reinstalled the application yet. I will restart and see if that fixes and then reinstall and see if that fixes and update here.

  • Restarting my machine fixed the issue. It should be noted, there was no prompt suggesting restart after installation. The installer attempted to call the executable directly after installation and had the same error noted in the original post.

    Also, in the bug report linked, there is an additional issue listed with the character counter for the bug reporter.

    Best of luck guys, I really want this to take off and replace Origin 🙂

  • Tried this & the earlier suggestion someone else had of removing the crash reporter. Absolutely NOTHING is working for me. I've reinstalled twice, deleted all of these folders three times (once without a reinstall), I've tried using "App Recovery", restarting my PC in various orders, absolutely nothing changes.

  • I think I am having a similar issue. The application crashes on sign in and gives me this error code. But the interwebz is saying that this is an errorcode thats usually thrown with missing or corrupted data i think?

  • Hi I have the same problem. I have experienced it just now, when I tried to play Star Wars Squadrons through Xbox Game Pass. I discovered that it was Origin that crashed EA Desktop, since when I turned it off, the EA Desktop app opened with no problem.

    Please EA delete that useless Desktop app and integrate it into Origin. Its ridiculous that I have one launcher per every publisher, but I have to use two just for EA (bc for example Battlefield 4 wont run with EA Desktop because its on Origin...)

    @4321R12122 YES, that works!
    I wanna explain it a bit better :
    open the folder C:/programs/electronic arts/ea desktop/ and then double-click on "eabackgroundservice.exe" and then you double-click (start) "eadesktop.exe"
    So if we start this backgroundservice before we start ea desktop, then it works !

    I thought this would fix the 100% cpu usage of Apex but to no avail. This game has been playable for 2 years until the past week when its now unplayable as it lags in-game with high cpu usage constantly even with all the game settings on low. NO other game does this and no other game have i tried tweaking so many settings, rolling back or re-installing drivers.

    Given there are tens of thousands of people saying the same thing i am at a disbelief this issue is not being addressed at all let alone as a high priority issue.

    This is a P1/S1 issue you need to action now given the money spent by people on this game.
