game installation broken after update

For the second time in the past 3 months, a Sims 4 game update leads to something being completely broken.

In this case, an installation error occured that would not let me continue the update. When i clicked on cancel, the rest of the update disappeared and the client said the game was ready to launch. when i tried this, it said Activation64.dll was broken. I tried to run the in-client repair, it took half an hour to get to approximately 70% before, on my first try, leading to crash my entire PC and when i restarted, the "repair" gets stuck on "calculating time" and i have to try again. On try number 2 it didn't crash my PC and instead just skipped to the "calculating time" part. Also, when it gets stuck, I can't cancel the process, I have to force-close the client, which is not a big deal but just very annoying and also not intended I assume.

It's astonishing how this client seems to be even more broken than the infamous Riot Games client. If I have to reinstall the entire game everytime a mid-sized update needs to be deployed, I'd rather have the option to play the game fully offline to avoid these mandatory updates, since playing an outdated game is more enjoyable than not being able play at all.

  • @AkaliJhomenTethi  Have you uninstalled and reinstalled Sims 4 yet?  If not, I'd suggest doing a clean uninstall with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine), like this:

    • Put aside your Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts and rename it to something that doesn't include the words "Sims 4."
    • Download Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine) from here.
    • Launch Revo, select Sims 4 from the list, and click Uninstall.
    • Once the game is uninstalled, select "Moderate" under "scanning modes," and click Scan.
    • Review the list, in case there's something you want to save; otherwise, click Select All, and then Delete.
    • Close Revo, and restart your computer.

Uninstall the EA App with Revo as well.  I don't have instructions for that at the moment, but the process should be straightforward.  Restart again when you're done.

Install the EA App, then create a new folder into which you'll install Sims 4.  The folder should be on the root level of the drive of your choice, for example C:\Games is fine, but not C:\Program Files\Games.  This new folder is important because it's possible the folder where you've previously installed Sims 4 is corrupted or has borked permissions.

If you use a third-party antivirus, make sure you've set exceptions for EADesktop.exe and TS4_x64.exe.

  • Yes I have reinstalled the game and everything worked. But that was never the point. I have had to reinstall game after the two most recent larger game updates. If this becomes a habit, I'll just stay offline to avoid updates altogether. I will keep the Revo uninstaller in mind, if this happens again. But I would think that if one of the folders was corrupted I would still have issues, since via the normal reinstallation most folders are kept intact as I noticed.

Ideal case is future updates run clean. But in case they're not, thanks for the hint ✌️
