Mass Effect 2 - Error on EA side...

As per topic name, how is it possible that EA still doesn't seem able to fix this problem? I literally tried all of the possible fixes (the fact that EA doesn't know which may or not work is hilarious), with no result.

EA Report error: 3ad16dc9-694b-4be4-9094-f701f3a6ae03

Hereby attached the dxdiag report.

Best.

    Hi Alexis,

Thanks for sharing the DxDiag. I had a look through it and the crash doesn’t appear to be coming from EA’s servers. Windows is actually logging repeated crashes of MassEffect2.exe itself, which means the game is failing locally and the EA app is just showing a generic “EA side” error afterward.

Your system (Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 2080 Ti, 16 GB RAM) is more than powerful enough for Mass Effect 2, so this is most likely a runtime dependency, overlay conflict, or corrupted config issue rather than a hardware limitation.

Please try the following steps in order:

    1. Clear the EA app cache

    1. Open the EA app
    2. Click Menu (☰) → Help → App Recovery
    3. Select Clear Cache

    EA guide: https://help.ea.com/en/articles/technical-issues/clear-cache/

    2. Disable the EA in‑game overlay

    1. EA app → Settings
    2. Application
    3. Toggle In‑game overlay OFF

    3. Repair the game

    1. Open Library in EA app
    2. Click the three dots on Mass Effect 2
    3. Select Repair

    EA guide: https://help.ea.com/en/articles/orders-and-rewards/ea-app-game-download-installation-loading-not-working/

    4. Install the legacy DirectX runtime (required by older games)

Mass Effect 2 uses older DirectX components that are not included with modern Windows installs.

    Download and install: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

    5. Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1

    Download and install both versions: x86 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999), x64 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999)

    6. Check overlay/monitoring software

Older DX9 games like ME2 can crash if overlays inject into them. Before launching the game, fully close:

    • Discord overlay
    • NVIDIA overlay / ShadowPlay
    • MSI Afterburner + RivaTuner
    • OBS game capture
    • Any FPS monitoring or RGB utilities

    7. Reset the game’s local config

    1. Go to: Documents\BioWare\
    2. Rename the folder Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 2_backup
    3. Launch the game again (it will regenerate fresh settings).

If the issue continues, could you confirm a couple of things so we can narrow it down further?

    • Are you launching the game through EA app only, or Steam → EA app?
    • Does the crash happen before the splash screen, at the menu, or when loading a save?
    • Are you using any mods, ReShade, or overlays?

Once we know that, we can target the next troubleshooting step.
