Re: Mass Effect 1 Crashes after launching EA App

I just ran into this today. I thought maybe it was mods and did extensive troubleshooting/reinstalls. Turns out the base game, clean of any nexus mods etc, still does the same thing. Freezes, not a crash, has to be closed by either doing a Windows sign out or having Task Manager open in another monitor to kill the process. After said extensive troubleshooting, (I work in IT so I know what sort of things to go for) I can sadly say I've been completely unable to identify a root cause. I got the original Mass Effect from Origin/EA App SPECIFICALLY because the Steam version had developed some unfixable issues, mostly related to the BDTS and Pinnacle Station DLC. Now it seems the EA version is even more toast. Gonna reinstall the steam version now and see if it does the same thing though, before I cry foul. If what OP claims is true about being able to run it from Origin (which I don't think you can install anymore at the time of writing) then my steam version should at least let me play without freezing.

    Hi, OP Here.

    @Resztaczasu has solved the problem!

    I have been playing without issues after trying the solution!

    Now I can do my Trilogy playthrough.

    @Resztaczasu you have my sincerest thanks for finding the (utterly confounding, seriously how DID you figure this out?) solution and saving this game!

    God Bless!

  • Hi @DarthVega3 thank you for kind words and xp.

    It is a confusing solution - normally one would assume that all extras (overlays, screen recorders etc.) will cause problems not solve them. 🙂

    If you are curious how I figured it out - I've read like half of the Internet and tried various solutions, then after one EA App reinstall the game miraculously worked. For one time. But after I played other game, restarted PC ME1 started crashing again. After I ruled out antivirus blocking access for something I started to think if I've changed anything else in my setup and remembered that that one time when ME1 was working I probably didn't change some of the EA App settings. It turned out to be it. I was so happy when it worked, because after a long week of seeking solution I was ready to give up.

  • The steam version did work fine for me. I also had to go through the long process of installing the ALOT and MEIMTU mods for Mass Effect, if you're familiar. Long process... that I had to go through several times now for this... I had the EA app overlay disabled for sure, so it's a safe bet this would work for me. I had it turned off due to some really aggravating shenanigans it did in Battlefield V, and specifically when playing it on Windows 11 a while back. Thanks for the fix though, only a matter of time before I want Bring Down the Sky back. Only way to be able to biotic toss Batarians around in OG Mass Effect.

    @Resztaczasu Thank you for posting this fix. New computer, finally got most things installed and cooperating with Windows 11, wanted to relax and play a bit of Mass Effect. And it kept freezing in the first couple of minutes. Turning the in-game overlay back on seems to have solved the problem. Thanks again!

    @Resztaczasu Dzięki!!! Thanks for this, I was pulling my remaining hair out, trying solutions from PCwiki, troubleshooting etc. Nothing worked. And mods specifically say to disable origin in game, so it's counter-intuitive. Now I can introduce my wife to Mass Effect trilogy 😀
